Kim Richards, star of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” stormed out of a therapy session with Dr. Phil McGraw after accusing him of staging an alcoholism intervention.
Richards, who will appear on the April 28 episode of the Dr. Phil Show, was especially upset after McGraw suggested her alcoholism made her a bad parent.
“Are you living a lie telling everyone, ‘I’ve been sober for three years’?” Dr. Phil asked as three of Kim’s four children, Brooke Brinson, Chad Davis, and Kimberly Jackson, looked on. “You are drunk in a bar, fighting with a cop, that is not good mothering.”
A furious Richards fired back, “Is this an intervention? I’m sorry, I can’t,” before walking off (see video). Before walking out on Dr. Phil, Kim admitted she felt guilty for drinking shortly before getting arrested April 16.
“I’m beating myself up over this,” Richards told Dr. Phil, author of The 20/20 Diet. “I poured a drink of vodka, and I thought ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’”
Kim has struggled with alcoholism for years, and went to rehab for alcoholism and substance abuse in 2011. According to the Beverly Hills Police Department, Richards was arrested April 16 after cops were called to the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel at 1:30 a.m. after complaints about Kim’s drunken behavior.
Sources said Kim locked herself in a bathroom and refused to come out. Richards, 50, “was displaying symptoms of alcohol intoxication including slurred speech and belligerent insolent behavior, cursing at the officers and passively resisted arrest,” according to a police statement posted.
Cops said Kim was uncooperative, reeked of alcohol and slurred her speech. Richards was taken to a local jail, where she kicked a police officer. Kim was cited and later released. Richards was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, battery on a police officer and public intoxication.
Update April 26 – Kim Richards has checked into rehab for substance and will stay at a live-in facility in Malibu for “as long as it takes.” Bravo executives have demanded Kim get help or risk getting fired.
Kim’s Alcoholism Has Been Her Main Storyline for 4 Seasons
Sources told TMZ Kim’s drinking binge started in the early evening April 16, when she watched the three-part reunion of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” at her daughter Brooke’s house.
Richards was reportedly distraught because she believes her “RHOBH” co-stars Lisa Rinna and Lisa Vanderpump had caused a rift between her and her sister Kyle Richards.
Kim admitted on season five of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” that she has been under a lot of stress, as she has been caring for her dying ex-husband, Monty Brinson, who has cancer. Friends say Richards is also depressed because she’s broke, gets no money for child support, and is in the middle of planning her daughter Brooke’s wedding.
Kim’s erratic behavior on season five (which just wrapped) led to a physical altercation between her sister, Kyle Richards, and their co-star Brandi Glanville on the Jan. 27 episode of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Richards’ alcoholism has been a recurring story line on the “RHOBH” for the past four seasons after her bizarre antics forced sister Kyle to send her packing to rehab for substance abuse treatment.
In 2011, Kim went to rehab for alcoholism and substance abuse. This past season, Richards repeatedly clashed with co-stars Lisa Rinna, Eileen Davidson and her sister Kyle Richards after the women questioned her sobriety. Kim vehemently insisted she was completely sober — until her April 16 arrest.
