Years after the introduction of spinning classes into the fitness world, new school cycling classes from SoulCycle, Kinetic Cycling, and others have made spinning the once-again trendy workout of choice for fitness lovers around the country.
Combining cycling with studio ambiance, motivation, and sound systems that put your local CrossFit to shame, SoulCycle and Kinetic Cycling have been a big reason why it’s cool to spin again.
With SoulCycle and Kinetic Cycling just down the street from one another in Los Angeles’ Brentwood area , you might find yourself wondering how the two compare. Here are a few things to consider when choosing between SoulCycle and Kinetic Cycling:
If you’re looking for motivation and an experience with your workout, SoulCycle has both in buckets that Kinetic can’t touch. With a dark, almost-too-serious ambiance in the studio before the music kicks in and instructors with just the right attitude to get you moving, it’s almost impossible to resist spinning your heart out to the expertly-selected beats.
Once class gets going, SoulCycle has the intensity of a CrossFit class. Somehow, at the end of each class, you’re rewarded with zen-like conclusion with affirmations reminiscent of your best yoga class. It’s a unique blend that somehow works.
At Kinetic, instead of being in a dark, ambient room, class takes place in a room with a cool blue light, accompanied by black lights. It’s fun, but doesn’t nearly feel as “secret society” and motivating as SoulCycle.
Above the instructor, a large screen plays music videos that accompany the class’ music. While there are some great music videos, it kind of takes away from the experience of focusing on the workout and the “you against the workout” vibe at SoulCycle.
In Brentwood, one place where SoulCycle has Kinetic beat without question are the facilities.
SoulCycle has a full service locker room complete with showers, towel service, and day use lockers for all SoulCyclers. While not as spacious or as luxurious as Equinox, the bathroom facilities are generally spotless. You can easily come to SoulCycle straight from work, change into workout clothes, clip your shoes on and be ready to go.
Kinetic doesn’t have its own bathroom, only a one-at-a-time bathroom for men and women used by the whole floor. Since the bathroom is shared and not nearly as well-maintained, it smells a little bit and is nowhere near a pleasant experience. If you’re going to Kinetic, it’s best if you come changed and ready to go because getting the key for the bathroom down the hallway, changing, and making it into class can be a little hectic if someone makes it there before you. Kinetic also doesn’t offer towels for its members.
Both Kinetic and SoulCycle have shoes available for rent. They both use top notch bikes that will be better than any cycling bike you’ll come across in your regular life.
The one place that Kinetic has SoulCycle beat is price. Classes are generally half the price of SoulCycle and you’ll get the same workout on a great bike.
For the reduced cost, you don’t get a locker room or towel service, both of which are pretty important in a sweaty workout like spinning. The bathroom situation is subpar for anything that would cost around the same price as Equinox on a regular monthly basis, as it’s a half step up from your local gas station or CVS.
Whether you make SoulCycle or Kinetic your cycling home in Brentwood, you’ll get a great workout. You’ll sweat, have fun, and deal with mildly confusing parking and traffic that comes with the area. Both locations are filled with beautiful, fit people who support newcomers and create a community around the workout.
If you have some extra cash to spare, you won’t regret giving SoulCycle a shot – the facilities are clean, well-maintained, and as full service as you’d expect. If you’re self-motivated and only care about the workout, Kinetic will give you a place to sweat with exceptional bikes and a great sound system.
