Tonight’s episode begins with Colby dropping some truth: it’s bad to be the king. Or at least, it’s bad to be the guy who survives a Nerd Off, because “then they fear you even more.” In this week’s Nerd War, the teams go head-to-head in a battle royale of nerdy party games. Each team has a mysterious celebrity nerd to help them win.
House Hooloovoo (Blue) gets Penn Jillette; Team Smash (Green) gets Rachelle Lefevre. You might know Rachelle from Under the Dome, which went from a promising show in season one to a laughable disaster in season two with Lefevre spouting some of the dumbest lines. In a battle between judges, Blue Team has the advantage.
Round One: Name That Nerd. Each team picks a captain, the rest of the team is shown a famous nerd and must use one word clues to try to explain who the mystery nerd is. It’s 10 points for each correct answer and each team has two minutes to name as many nerds as they can. House Hooloovoo goes first (again). Ben KILLS it with 140 points using his near-telepathic skills to guess the nerds. Green team’s Colby matches Ben’s achievement with 140 points.
Round Two: Pic-so-Nerdy. Teams have 30 seconds to identify a nerdy object from clues drawn by a teammate. Players rotate for a total of three minutes per team. It’s 20 points for each correct answer. Green Team gets seven correct answers, which brings them to 280 points. Blue Team manages to beat that with eight correct answers, putting them at 300 points total.
Round Three: Panto-Nerd. One team member must act out the title of a famous nerdy TV show or film. The team must guess what it is within two minutes. Each correct answer earns 30 points. Team Smash goes first and reaches 490 points. House Hooloovoo wins the Nerd War by correctly interpreting My Little Pony. For their reward, they receive an ultimate tabletop pack from Rio Grande Games. It’s nice to see tabletop games in the spotlight!
This is the episode where children are named “loin products” which makes it the best episode in “King of the Nerds” history.
When the Secret Six alliance falls apart, Jonathan (the only male in it) gets chosen to go against Colby. Infuriated by the betrayal, he goes over to the Kaitlin and reveals the conspiracy. The tactic works: Heather (who said she wasn’t going to vote for Jonathan but then decided she was) gets picked instead for Nuclear Nerd Off.
As an aside, Colby’s the first strong competitor who doesn’t come off as a maniacal psychopath but rather a well-rounded, confident individual who is realistic about his chances. The show will suffer without him. Kaitlin makes a big show of sabotaging Colby’s studying sessions as he practices his Sudoku while actually helping him.
Hosty Bobby is dressed as Lord Humongous, which is terrifying as Bobby is very hairy. Inside the nuclear sludge are the last remnants of the last game on Earth: a word jumble. It’s up to the contestants to complete the word jumble and restore gaming civilization by retrieving 28 letters from three toxic waste bins, assemble the words, and solve the puzzle. An incorrect guess results in a 30 second penalty. Here’s the word jumble:
SEND _ _ _ _ .
BAND OF _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .
HAS ATTACKED LAB.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ IS AT.
WARHED COULD _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
AT ANY MOMENT.
ENTER THE NAME OF PROJECT THAT STARTED IT ALL
BAND OF MUTANTS.
HAS ATTACKED LAB.
RADIATION IS AT.
WARHEAD COULD DETONATE.
AT ANY MOMENT.
There are certain letters with a red box around them, which are then used for the project’s title. These letters are: H M T A A N T N A
The answer: MANHATTAN
Colby wins! Next week is a horror theme.
