The Minnesota Wild were off in just about everything they did in a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles Kings Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center. Their passing was rarely on target. Their position was
The Kings (12-6-5) took advantage with a four-goal first period before coasting to the shutout. They had several odd-man rushes, including a pair of 2-on-1 plays that resulted in goals.
“Pretty much everything (went wrong),” Mike Yeo said. “We actually came out with some good energy, but the execution and details killed us.
“That was not even close to way we are supposed to play the game.”
The Kings were in the second game of a back-to-back after losing in a shootout to the Nashville Predators on road. They had some jump, but really did not dominate the game.
The difference was the goaltenders. Martin Jones stopped his shots and Darcy Kuemper did not.
“I felt good this morning. I felt good in warmups,” Kuemper said. “It was one of those nights were it doesn’t go you way.
“I put the team in a bad spot early.”
Yeo had thoughts about pulling Kuemper more than once, but he has made a goaltender change in three straight home games — including Kuemper twice. The Wild had won the previous two.
The Wild (12-9-0) had been playing well — winners in four of the last five. But, as can happen, the team did not bring the momentum from Saturday’s win over the Florida Panthers home with them.
“I don’t have an answer for that,” Yeo said about teams’ usually playing flat after a long road trip. “There’s been a lot of smarter people than me trying to figure it out and haven’t been able to come up with an answer as well.”
The Wild return to action Friday against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center.
