First Night Northampton is a 12-hour family friendly festival of the arts in the city wrapping up the year to on New Years Eve. The events 22 activities for all ages are scheduled at locations throughout the city. It is supported by hundreds of performers providing entertainment at these events. The festival climaxes with a magical fireworks display and traditional ball rising from the roof of Hotel Northampton.
Here are a few events the festival has to offer.
Circus Wonderland at 12 noon to 1:30 PM is an early event that impresses with a super-sized circus spilling into the streets with the Expandable Brass Band.
Paintbox Theatre: Tarzan at Theatre 14 at Smith College, 1:00 -1:45 PM & 2:00 – 2:45 PM
First night Party
Starting 2:00 PM performances at the Halle Flanagan Theater has entertainment for kids and adults. Puppeting, singing groups of trios, quartets, duos a cappella voice and a guitar orchestra are featured. Performers include Jody Scalise the Motion Man.
Storyteller/musician John Porcino suggests amusement at Forbes Library at 3:00-3:45 and 4:00 – 4.45 PM.
Valley Light Opera
Valley Light Opera Zoo will be performing a one-act comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and lyrics by Bolton Rowe. Performances will be in 460-seat Theater 14 at the Smith College Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts at 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
Fireworks are common for many celebrations at events throughout the year. Without exception a colossal fireworks display at the last night of the year is an appropriate activity, which is scheduled for 6:15 PM. The last evening of the year would not be the same without a traditional ‘ ball raising’ at midnight from atop Hotel Northampton.
The Connecticut River is at the eastern edge of city limits of Northampton MA, a city of 28,592. Northampton is forty-one miles southwest of Pittsfield, 20 miles south of Greenfield, 19 miles north of Springfield and 94 miles east of Albany
The vantage point of the famous Ox-Bow painting is the Connecticut River within city limits at the northern base of Mount Nonotuck. Mount Nonotuck at 700” elevation is 7 miles south of Northampton as a part of the larger Metacomet Ridge extending from Long Island Sound to nearby Vermont. The mount rises steeply 700 feet from the valley revealing a rugged and scenic view.
Northampton MA is a 3 3/4 hour drive of 317 miles from Rochester NY. Drive I-90 east into Massachusetts to Springfield then US 91 north to Northampton MA.
