According to lipsologist, Jilly Eddy, lips have a lot to say about you without ever speaking a word. Eddy believes personality, emotions, energy and more are revealed when evaluating your lip print.
Not happy with what your lips have to say about you? Lip injections remain a popular cosmetic treatment. Despite the demand, the Real Housewives television franchise can frighten people away amidst fears of emerging looking more Jessica Rabbit than Angelina Jolie.
‘Some clients express concern they’ll end up looking like one of the Real Housewives’, laughs Dr. Wendy Smeltzer, an experienced medical aesthetics professional and medical director of InLiv in Calgary. ‘The key is to balance the lips to the person’s face. Often clients in their 40’s and 50’s are more interested in restoring their lips than enhancing them. Lip injections are about more than just volume; a skilled injector can treat a broad range of issues,’ notes Smeltzer.
Dr. Lizette Lourens, founder of Age Management Institute in Alberta, agrees. ‘I encourage people to bring along a photo of what their lips looked like when they were younger, so we can recreate a natural-looking result. That’s more helpful than a celebrity photo whose facial structure may be completely different,’ says Lourens.
As we age, collagen in the lips dissipates causing them to sag or deflate. If the natural border and shape of the lip has been retained, then all that’s needed may be a little volume. However, it doesn’t have to be just about creating or restoring volume. Lips can also be reshaped and redefined.

Lip injections are typically performed using cosmetic fillers such as Juvéderm Ultra. Dr. Lourens endorses combining a number of treatment options including filler, Botox and Selphyl to rebuild the overall framework of the lips.
- Small amounts of filler can be used to boost the cupid’s bow
- If the corners of the mouth droop, a little Botox can be used to lift the area
- Filler can be injected just along the vermillion border to add a hint of volume without plumping the entire lip
- A tiny bit of Botox above the top lip can create a subtle upturn on the top lip, making it appear fuller
- For ‘smoker’s lines’ or crepe-y skin above the upper lip, injecting Selphyl or platelet rich plasma can plump up the wrinkles and improve the health of the skin
‘Being able to use a number of different treatments as needed to ensure a natural-looking lip is essential. I don’t endorse what I call the overdone ‘avatar’ look that was synonymous with lip injections for several years,’ advises Lourens. ‘And it’s important to keep it all in perspective. Young lips on an old face are very unflattering.’
If you have filler injected in your lips and feel they are too big, you don’t have to wait until the treatment naturally dissipates.

Both Dr. Smeltzer and Dr. Lourens have corrected lip injections performed by overzealous injectors. Corrections can be made using hyaluronidase to help dissolve the filler.
When considering lip injections for enhancement or restoration, do some research, read reviews and ask questions during your consultation. Be sure to request before and after photos of work done by the injector, not simply photos from the product supplier.
