Happy almost new year everybody! Now that 2014 is a done deal, let’s review.
When I started writing for this site, my original thought was that I’d be doing so in order to keep shooting national acts traveling through the area. You see, in order to get into a photo pit, 99% of the time you have to be working for a publication. So this was my way of taking care of that, until I could get a gig on a local or national level. It would also give me a chance to support our local bands by writing about, as well as, photographing them.
So early in the year, I sent this publication a sample article and got excepted. And then the reality of having to produce something on a regular basis set in. I thought, “What if I run out of things to write about? How am I going to pull this off? I’m not a writer. I’m a photographer writing so that I can shoot.” Yeah, I was a little freaked out.
Fast forward to now–
I’m happy to report that I never ran out of anything to shoot or write about. Far from it. And the local aspect of this column snowballed and overshadowed the national aspect by a long shot. What was happening locally grabbed my interest and kept me busy all year long. Our local bands also brought some killer out of town bands to the area, which I was lucky enough to catch. And by the time October came around, the music festivals (The Chelsea West Fest and The Artistree Festival) had me happily “ripping and running” throughout those events.
I also noticed, as the year rolled on, that I was listening to local releases way more than anything else in my music collection or on Spotify. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. The music released this year was just that good.
So needless to say, busy is an understatement when describing 2014.
My goal for 2015 is the same as it was for the past year – to see bands that I’ve never seen before, while still supporting my long time favorites. That’s where I could use your help. Is there a local or national show you think I should check out? Is there a new CD you think I should hear? Is there a cool video you think I should see? If so, shoot me an email and let me know about it.
If a friend hadn’t told me about Gogol Bordello, I wouldn’t have gone to that show. If someone hadn’t sent me a Facebook invite to like the Feral Conservatives, I might not have ran into them. If the guys at SICMaN of Virginia hadn’t sent me a copy of their latest release, I might not have heard it—you get the idea, so hit me up!
Thank you all for reading, liking and sharing this over the past year. And be sure to check out the slideshow that includes some of my favorite moments of 2014.
