What should you do when you come across a photo of a pet that has been found, and you know you have seen a similar-looking pet posted somewhere as lost – or vise versa?
Comparing lost & found listings takes a little practice, but anybody can do it.
The first thing to check are specifics, such as whether or not the lost pet and found pet you are comparing are both the same gender. Check locations , but don’t give them too much weight, unless the lost animal has been spotted in her own neighborhood recently. Pets can go pretty far, fairly quickly.
Next, compare the photos very carefully:
- Look for shape and position of ears. Do they stand up? Fold over? How long are they? Compare the tails; length, markings, and position. Is the tail curled? Straight? Stubby?
- Compare eye color.
- Compare nose color.
- Look for unique markings.
- Compare unusual pigmentation, especially in white animals.
If you do all this and think you have found a match, please contact both parties and give them each other’s contact information.
Today’s column features family pets who are missing in northern Ohio. Please take a few minutes to look at their photos and see if any are missing from your area. If so, please keep an eye out for them. To view pets that have been found in Ohio, please visit Lost & Found Ohio Pets on Facebook.
If you have lost your pet or found a stray animal, please contact the Cleveland Pets Examiner or Lost & Found Ohio Pets with all of the information. The more information the better! Be sure to include date missing, area last seen, pet’s name – age – breed – and other distinguishing characteristics. Don’t forget to provide contact information and a photo.
