When you find a stray pet with no visible identification, there are steps to take and certain things to take into consideration. It’s not fair or conscionable to rehome the animal immediately. At the pound, and animal has a three day hold period, and even then some advocates feel it is too small a window for owners to find them.
The first thing you should do is to notify local animal control, police, and shelters that you have found a pet. It’s not just a good idea, it’s the responsible thing to do and in many places it is the law. A pet owner searching for their lost pet will be checking with police, animal control and shelters in their search. Provide a photo if possible, and be sure to give them your contact information.
Next, remember that just because the stray you found doesn’t have i.d. tags, doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to identify her. Take the animal to a vet or shelter where they can scan for a microchip. Check with local vets to see if any of them recognize the pet. Ask your postal carrier if he recognizes the animal. If you are still not able to identify the pet, hang FOUND posters in the neighborhood and take out an ad in your local paper (many times found ads are free). Please give a pet’s owner ample time to find their missing family member before you resort to rehoming.
