Did you know that one out of every five pets will “get lost” during their lifetime? According to the ASPCA®, approximately 15% of pets (cats and dogs almost equally) are lost each year. Sadly, very few of them are recovered at pounds. The national average for impounded stray animals making it home again is only 8.25%.
The ASPCA says that about 85% of lost pets are eventually recovered, but mostly because they return home (more common with cats than dogs) or are found by their owners while searching the neighborhood. It’s estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States, so the 15% that go missing is approximately equal to 11 and a quarter million pets!
Lost & Found Ohio Pets crunched their numbers for 2014, and found that around 1,337 pets were reported missing on their page during the year, and that they had been notified that about 504 of them had been found. Since many pet owners post their lost pets but fail to notify L&FOP when the pet is found, they report that they have a success rate of greater than 37.75%. They expect that number will increase as they do follow ups.
You can increase a pet’s chance of getting home again by sharing today’s list of missing pets on social media and with family and friends. The more people who view their photos and information, the better chances they have.
