In the wake of the holidays, Lost & Found Ohio Pets has been inundated with reports of missing animals. If one of your pets is missing, or if you find a stray animal, remember that in such cold weather, a pet can get hypothermia or frostbite in just a few minutes.
Frostbite can occur in both cats and dogs when they are exposed to freezing or subfreezing temperatures. It most commonly affects the tips of the ears, the tail, the scrotum, and the feet (especially the toes). Some medical conditions (e.g., diabetes) may increase the risk of frostbite. There is also an increased incidence of frostbite when it is very cold and windy, or if the animal is wet.
The first sign of frostbite is pale or gray tissue. The area will also be cold to the touch and hard. As the area thaws it may become red. In severe frostbite, within several days the tissue will die and will begin to appear black in color and will eventually slough over the course of several weeks.
If you suspect a pet has frostbite, you need to warm the affected area rapidly with warm (NEVER HOT) water. The recommended water temperature is 104 -108° F. Use warm compresses or soak the affected areain a bowl of warm water. Do NOT use direct dry heat such as a heating pad or hair dryer. DO NOT warm a frostbitten area if it cannot be kept warm, because if it refreezes, it causes worse damage to the tissues.
After you have warmed the area, dry it gently. Do not rub or massage the area. Have the pet examined by a vet immediately.
