Thousands of pets will escape their yards and homes during the holiday season and become lost, but with a little planning and common sense, you can make sure your pet is not one of them.
It’s the busiest time of year for most of us, as we get ready for the holidays, entertain guests, and still try to carry on with our normal daily lives. That means we are often in a hurry, or multi-tasking. That’s why it’s the time of year when you need to be extra careful about keeping your pets safe, and home, for the holidays. There are lots of opportunities for accidents both at home, and on the road.
- If you are planning on traveling during the holidays and you are taking a pet with you, make sure your pet is microchipped, and that the chip is registered with your current info. Make sure I.D. Tags and license tags are current. Make sure collars and leashes are in good shape, and not frayed or ragged.
- If your pet will be kenneled while you travel, do your research. Make sure the boarding facility you are using has a good reputation. Sometimes boarding facilities remove collars, so having your pet microchipped (and the chip registered) is always a good precaution.
- There is often an increase in deliveries during the month of December, so don’t leave anything to chance. Don’t leave your pet in the yard unattended (not even a fenced yard!). Keep your gate padlocked, if possible.
- When you are carrying packages in, be sure to secure pets away from the door in another room or behind a baby gate, so they don’t rush out when the outside door opens.
