I normally don’t cover club events. But this one caught my eye because it benefits one of my favorite non-profits, SF Openhouse.
LoveBall’s San Francisco edition will occur this Friday, Feb. 27 starting at 10pm at SF Oasis. Tickets are as little as $10 if you get them in advance.
So what the heck is LoveBall – it’s a night of creative expression, love, and harmonious decadence, via a re-imagination of ball culture a la “Paris Is Burning.”
It is in no way your average ball as they want to pay homage to the culture of each city that we are in, inspire fun expressions of the imagination, and give into camp for camp’s sake. They also stress that it’s not about winning the ball but more about having your moment to shine.
Inspired by ball culture, creative nightlife, and the legendary 1989 fundraiser ‘Love Ball,’ by Susanne Bartsch, LoveBall has a simple mission; to provide a night where people can come together, continue a queer tradition of creative and decadent expression.
What started in a seedy leather bar, on Valentine’s Day, LoveBall has become a leading annual event in Portland. It has sold-out venues of 1,000+ and toured to Vancouver, B.C. and now in San Francisco which includes host/judges Heklina who is joined by Raja Gemini (season 3 winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and Richie Rich (designer of Pan-O-Ramic and co-creato of Heatherette).
Since it’s benefiting a great cause, guests are encouraged to buy the slightly more expensive VIP tickets so they can also partake in the silent art auction.
VIP ticket holders are included in an exclusive event will be held the hour before doors open to the ball at Oasis. The auction will include a selection of donated framed art from eclectic private collections along the creative West Coast. Some of the art in the mix includes work by Traver Rains (photographer, Heatherette co-creator/designer, and TRains designer), Zach Augustine (Nike Creative Director and global influencer), and Michael Shaw Talley (LoveBall ringmaster and PNW style editor at large). Beyond the fantastic art up for auction, guests will also enjoy a complimentary bubble, both hop and grape varietals. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and greet the celebrity guest judges. VIP tickets are only $25.00.
