The 88th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City is being threatened by anarchist protestors who reportedly participated in protests and riots in Ferguson, Missouri and throughout the United States. The plans to disrupt the parade were exposed over Twitter and and Facebook and also from witnesses to a “planning meeting” held by organizers in Brooklyn who were invigorated after their recent successes in the Big Apple and elsewhere.
The New York Post reports that protestors feel “emboldened” by the lack of response from law enforcement in New York. “The police aren’t going to arrest us and they are not going to shoot us. They’re walking right by us now with their heads down and their tails between their legs,” said an organizer to the group at a Union Square planning session Wednesday night. He added, “The police aren’t going to arrest us and they are not going to shoot us,”
The New York City Police Department has been heavily criticized for their lack of action during the protests this week. Protests erupted around the country after of the announcement that a Grand Jury decided there was no probable cause to try Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of an 18-year-old man, Mike Brown.
On August 9, 2014, Ferguson Officer Wilson shot Mike Brown after a fight started resulting from Wilson requesting Brown and a friend get out of the middle of a public street. Brown’s friend and several witnesses falsely claimed Wilson killed Brown while he was in a surrendering position with his hands up. After the ruling was announced on Monday night, riots and protests began across the country, mostly non-violent.
On Twitter, the hashtag #StopTheParade blew up yesterday with thousands of people encouraging the disruption of the annual event. Some tweets totally disregard fears over the safety of children attending, @NihalAQ tweets, “Ppl are upset about the innocent children that are going to be “confused.” Then let’s stop sugar coating this fake holiday. #stoptheparade.”
Back in September, after the People’s Climate March, NY Mayor de Blasio said, “I think the First Amendment is a little more important than traffic.” That was clearly how he felt during the recent protests. Cops were furious over having their hands tied, “We should have made 1,000 arrests,” one officer told the Post. Another said, “If an ambulance had to take the FDR to get to the hospital, what are they supposed to do?”
A source told the Post, “It’s hands-off police tactics. Welcome to our new world.” During one planning session, another “leader” bragged about their ability to get away with something as awful as disrupting the Thanksgiving Day Parade. “We feel empowered. We feel rejuvenated right now. The police are backing down because they don’t want to cause any more riots. If they put their hands on another minority, all-out war will break out,” he told a small crowd.
Another New York Post source said, “Mayor de Blasio ordered the NYPD to give a free ride to the mobs that blocked the Lincoln Tunnel, Brooklyn Bridge and other major thoroughfares Tuesday night. It’s coming from City Hall,” a source said. “We’re being told if it’s only traffic violations, don’t do anything.”
So much damage has already taken place over this false narrative. If the NYPD doesn’t stop these anarchists from attacking during the parade, they might just be stopped by the general public. With the dismissal for the safety of the thousands of families that will be attending, and a total of three and a half million people in attendance, protestors would be wise to stay away. The NYPD is monitoring the social media accounts of the people planning on the disruption and believe they will be able to stop any interruptions.
The 88th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs on CBS at 9:00am in Salem on CBS.
