When coming to visit Los Angeles, visiting a beach, any beach is a must as they are known for their sunny weather and beautiful sand beaches that are perfect for working on your tan or the most amazing backdrop to the vacation photos you’re bound to post on line. While at the beach why not take a couple hours out of your day to take a surf lesson? The ability to surf is an activity that you can take with you to any beach in the world. It’s great exercise but even more importantly, the exhilaration of catching a wave is an undeniable experience that will make you really feel alive.
For your first surf lesson, try the Malibu Longboards surf school. Surf lessons are available all year. Upon arrival you can pick up a wetsuit and surf board at Longboards site. Spend the first 15 to 20 minutes of your one or two hour surf lesson learning the basics from a teacher with the best reputation for being both fun and professional. Matt, a surfing veteran, is permitted and has been teaching people how to surf for several years.
There is so much to learn about surfing. You want a teacher with as much experience as Matt has. After twenty years experience you can trust that you are in good hands. As a college level surf coach Santa Monica College, you can rest assured that you are learning from a professional.
Get to know what sized surf board is the best fit for you. Knowing this is very important and should be taken seriously. You wouldn’t ice skate in shoes that are too big or ski with boots or ski’s that don’t fit. Doing so could cause an accident to occur.
It’s also important to learn where and when to surf. Some spots are good in the summer and others in the winter. Only experienced surfers know what spots are the best to surf and when. Learn how tides effect wave shapes. There are some spots where waves only break on low tide and others on high tide.
Try surfing and explore the proper timing of when to approach a wave. Learning timing takes time. Learn what to look for and what direction to go on a wave. Going the wrong direction can lead to a wipe out.
Discover what wetsuit is best for you so you can choose the proper one that will be the warmest and most flexible up against your skin.
Learn how to put the brakes on your surfboard. This is an important safety precaution that can prevent an accident. Pop ups on the surfboard is practiced on shore. There is also surfing rules and etiquette. Knowing proper surf behavior is must for every surfer so you don’t crash into some other surfer.
You should get about 20 to 30 waves to ride standing up before the end of your lesson. There are also paddle board lessons for those who need to warm up to the idea of riding waves.
Reserve your surfing lesson, surf camp or stand up paddle board lesson by phone or online in advance. One hour lessons include extra hour of practice. Private two hour surfing is $120 per lesson for up to 2 surfers. Private one hour surf lesson is $75 per surfer for between 1 and 4 surfers. Surf camps are available for group lessons.
