Marcus Mariota is one of the hottest names in the wide world of sports with the 2015 NFL Draft getting ready to open this evening. He is expected to be either the first or second overall pick in the draft, and there are quite a few teams that covet him and would love to snag him.
One team that would love to trade up and snag him is the Philadelphia Eagles, and his former coach Chip Kelly. Why should the Eagles trade up to select Mariota?
As of right now, the Eagles are looking at starting injury plagued quarterback Sam Bradford under center. That isn’t an ideal scenario, and he doesn’t come close to fitting Kelly’s system. He doesn’t have the type of athleticism that it takes to run an up-tempo system, and there is always the concern about the two torn ACL’s in as many seasons that he has suffered.
During his three-year collegiate career at Oregon, Mariota ended up throwing for 10,796 yards, 105 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions. He took care of the football extremely well as you can tell by the interception total, and also showed some athleticism to make plays with his legs. Mariota ended up picking up 2,237 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground throughout his career.
There are some concerns about whether or not Mariota will be able to translate his game to the next level. He ran an up-tempo system at Oregon, which is exactly why he would fit perfectly with what the Eagles are trying to do. Kelly knows how Mariota likes to play and what makes him comfortable, and he has all of the physical tools to be the type of quarterback that a franchise can build around long-term.
While it is nice to consider the possibility of the Eagles trading up for the second overall pick, it isn’t as nice to think about how much they would have to give up to make that happen.
Tennessee is willing to give up their second overall pick, but they are going to be asking for a steep price. Philadelphia currently holds the 20th overall pick, and would likely have to add another pick or two in this draft, and likely a first-round pick in next years NFL Draft. Kelly will have to decide whether or not it is worth mortgaging his future in order to bring in a quarterback that they could potentially build around.
Philadelphia has plenty of other needs on their roster that could be fixed with the 20th pick. Quarterback is a position that could use improvement, but they could likely get by and be a competitive team with Bradford at the helm. They could use another wide receiver in a big way, and there will be quite a few of them available later on in the first round.
Needless to say, today is going to be a very entertaining and fun day for NFL fans. It is going to be a very busy draft and there is potential for quite a few trades to go down. Philadelphia is certainly considering the possibility of trading up for Mariota, but it isn’t going to be an easy decision either way.
