There are a few things men have generally learned to be good at matching: your belt to your shoes, your tie to your shirt, suit and pocket square, and occasionally your socks to your shirt. But what about matching your socks to your underwear?
While it may sound funny at first, it’s the idea behind a new company called Related Garments, which was founded by brothers Mike and David Appel, who you may recognize from NBC’s Fashion Star. They’re calling their new collection a “fashion-forward line is the only brand to offer men packaged matching boxer briefs and dress socks. Revolutionizing the way men get ready in the morning, Related Garments helps men to undress to impress through stylish coordination.”
The company has already completed a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising $28,063 from 425 backers, so there’s a good number of people who think the concept has some merit.
The company’s PR firm recently sent over a set to check out, and after a few weeks of wear I’m generally impressed with the offerings, though I’m not sure I’m totally sold on the concept.
First up: the underwear. It comes in a boxer brief style in the typical four sizes, small (28-31″ waist), medium (32-34), large (34-36) and extra-large (36-40). It’s a 95% cotton, 5% spandex mix of fabric, and while I wouldn’t say it’s the softest fabric I’ve ever felt, it’s certainly fine for everyday wear. Given the rise of athletic-driven underwear as well as some manufacturers moving towards finer fabrics, Related Garments’ offering is almost a bit underwhelming.
As for the socks, they are only available in a standard one size fits all, covering shoe sizes 6 – 12, and come up to mid-calf, something that I find a bit low. As someone who generally wears a size 13 and is apprehensive about this kind of sizing, I was pleasantly surprised by the fit. They didn’t feel tight at all, and other than wanting them in an over-the-calf style, I could certainly see myself wearing them on a regular basis.
Which brings the discussion to the styles — there are currently five offerings in Related Garments’ debut collection, and there are two that stand out based on the socks, since that’s the part of the package that most people will be seeing. The beige and navy stripes and orange/navy/beige offerings are the most appealing, though I’m not sure I’m crazy about the stripes on the boxers. Hopefully the company can continue to grow in this department, as it will be here where I think people will be drawn to the line. Even if the feel of the fabric improves, there’s still a lot to be said for good design and visual appeal.
You can pre-order your set of Related Garments’ offerings via the company’s website, with a cost of $24.99 per set and an expected delivery time of 7 – 10 days.
