Many professional tennis matches are either in the bright sun or under the intense glare of stadium lights. Sunglasses would seem to be a standard part of a player’s equipment. Only a handful of today’s top players wear shades, but perhaps that is changing as the Association of Tennis Professionals(ATP) has agreed to a partnership with premium sunglasses brand, Maui Jim based in Hawaii.
The three year deal places Maui Jim as the official eye wear of the ATP World Tour which includes the Barclay World Tour Finals at the O2 arena in London
“We are delighted to have joined forces with ATP as tennis is such a great fit for Maui Jim,” said Martijn van Eerde, ATP Marketing Director for Europe.
Although a majority of players do not regularly wear sunglasses, ATP tour lineman and officials are frequently seen in sunglasses. As Laurent Delanney, Commercial Director of the ATP World Tour said: “With 46 of our 62 tournaments played outdoors, the partnership will provide our ATP World Tour officials with helpful equipment to perform their duty at the highest level.”
Maui Jim already has one brand ambassador in tennis legend Martina Hingis, but other players such as Samantha Stosur and Janko Tipsaravic are more noted for wearing sunglasses in many of their matches.
