Mayra Rosales loses 800 pounds – a story of loss, denial and redemption. Rosales, losing 800 pounds, underwent a remarkable transformation – both physically and emotionally – as the morbidly obese Texas woman dropped her weight from a life threatening half-ton to approximately 200 pounds. The once-bedstricken woman made headlines a number of years ago when she claimed – falsely – that she sat on her sister’s baby boy, killing him. Rosales said she agreed to take the blame, since she had nothing in life left to live for.
Writes the HuffPost on January 24: “Mayra Rosales rose to fame in 2008 for claiming to have killed her 2-year-old nephew by sitting on him. She weighed 1,100 lbs. then, but she was lying to cover for her sister. Mayra decided to do this because she thought she was near death. On the TLC special ‘Half-Ton Killer: Transformed,’ Mayra had made the tougher decision to fight for her life and health.”
Rosales, 34, weighed in excess of 1,000 pounds when her two-year-old nephew Eliseo was viciously struck in the head with a hairbrush swung by his mother and Mayra’s sister. The sisters concocted a plan: Eliseo’s mom begged her sister Mayra to claim she “rolled over and sat on” the boy; Mayra, fearing she was near death anyway, agreed to the fabrication.
When an autopsy was done, investigators debunked the sisters’ story. Instead of being smothered, the medical examiner discerned that Eliseo had died from a skull fracture. Jamie confessed and was sentenced to 15 years behind bars. In many ways, that was a turning point for Mayra.
Determined to live so that she could care for her sister’s other children, Mayra began shedding pounds with the help of eleven surgeries. She had a lap band procedure and underwent multiple surgeries to remove her excess skin, but more than that, Mayra said she had to change her entire perception about food and eating.
“Before it was living to eat,” she said. “And now you know, it’s just something normal.”
Admitting that she had “given up on life,” she turned to Houston surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, who spearheaded the cause to get Mayra down to a healthier, manageable weight.
“Once you’re in bed for several years, she had no life,” he said. “Once she got up and could walk and do things, you’ll be amazed how motivated people become.” Dr. Younan said that Rosales didn’t even qualify for gastric bypass surgery until she was able to lose hundreds of pounds on her own.
“I’m not diabetic, I do not have high cholesterol, I do not have high blood pressure,” the slimmed down Rosales boasted. “Now I’m okay and my organs are perfect.”
The Daily Mail, which carried startling pictures of Rosales when she was at her heaviest, reported that she “now has an active following on Facebook with over 18,000 fans, who she keeps updated as her transformation continues.”
Speaking of that dark time of her life, Rosales said: “I was alive but not living life,” she said. “I thought I was dying anyway so I decided to admit that I’d done it to protect my sister because I love her.”
Writes the Daily Mail: “Rosales is now in the process of getting custody of Jamie’s surviving children, who Rosales said are excited just to see her walking again.”
