Mayra Rosales loses more than 800 pounds after going through a dreadful ordeal a few years ago that put her in the headlines. The reason she embarked on this 800-pound weight loss was for the love of her sister’s kids, who needed a guardian.
With the 800-pounds gone Mayra could now take care of her sister’s children after her sister went to jail for the death of one of her kids. This is a crime that Mayra once confessed to.
If the name Mayra Rosales sounds familiar, it may be because this 800-pound weight loss wasn’t the first event to put her in the headlines. She was in the news for a darker event, being referred to as the “Half-Ton Killer,” according to Fox News on Feb. 28.
Back in 2008 when Rosales tipped the scales at over 1,000 pounds, her sister hit her 2-year-old son in the head with a hairbrush and that blow killed the toddler. Rosales loved her nephew and her sister too, so when her sister begged her to say that she accidentally sat on the tot and smothered him to death, she agreed.
Rosales was charged with murder in the death of the little boy. This is when she was nicknamed the “Half-Ton Killer” in the media, which must have been hard for her. She not only didn’t kill the boy, but she had drawn worldwide attention to her weight by conjuring up the story of sitting on the boy by accident and killing him, just as her sister planned.
When the child’s autopsy was complete, it was found that the boy didn’t die from being smothered. Rosales’ confession was discredited and charges were dropped, clearing Rosales’ name.
Rosales’ sister later confessed and was charged with child abuse and found guilty. Someone needed to watch her sister’s children, as she is serving 15-years for the death of her son. That someone was going to be Mayra, but to do this she needed to get to a healthy weight.
Rosales vowed that she would lose that weight so she could take on the guardian role. She gathered up her will-power and embarked on a journey to shed the pounds, according to KFOR.com News.
After a series of surgical procedures and a strict diet, 800 of the 1,000 pounds are gone. Doctors told her she needed to lose 600 pounds before they would do the gastric bypass surgery. In her first week she lost 100 pounds. The surgeries removed various tumors and excess skin.
She is not done yet and still wants to drop more weight, but the 800-pound weight loss is a feat to be celebrated. On Wednesday a TLC special will air at 9 p.m. ET, “Half-Ton Killer: Transformed.” This special chronicles her weight-loss journey. You can see a clip of that special in the video above.
She said when she weighed over 1,000 pounds, she was dying. She knew she was dying and that is why she didn’t mind taking the rap for her sister in her nephew’s death. She actually had to be cut out of the house to attend the court proceedings back in 2008.
If you had seen pictures of her at her heaviest, you would see it on her face that she was not long for the world, conveyed Rosale. She said she was alive, “but not living a life.” Today she looks nothing like the woman seen as the “Half-Ton Killer” years ago. She has lost more than 800 pounds, which is what she had set out to do.
