Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, the sights and sounds of Christmas are here. There are Christmas songs and songs of the season being played on the radio. Some radio stations started playing Christmas music in early November. There is a Christmas album by Maysa titled A Very Maysa Christmas on the Shanachie label. The songs are familiar songs about Christmas that we have know and love. On this album, even though the songs are about Christmas, they are not like you’ve heard before. In fact, this is an album you can listen to at other times of the year.
There are 10 songs on the disc and there is an element of jazz, rap, R&B and gospel. On the song This Christmas, Will Downing is featured on vocals with Ace Livingston on bass and Rhon Lawrence on guitar. Gerald Albright blows his horn on Silver Bells and Maysa gives a unique interpretation of Little Drummer Boy which features drum work by Chris “Big Dog” Davis, Thomas Dyani Akuru on percussion and Jazz Leak Akuru on the Sabar drum making his recording debut.
The other notable songs include: The First Noel, Christmas Time is Here, Joy to the World and Pray for Peace. It has been said over and over that this is the season of giving. If you are going to give an album, why not this one. It just might warm your heart and someone else’s. Even the great Stevie Wonder has said that Maysa is wonderful! I think he is right.
