Despite the constant media coverage regarding Bill Clinton’s tryst with intern Monica Lewinsky, the true Clinton-era scandals barely measured a blip on the media reporting scale. Travel-gate? Largely ignored. Donations to the Clintons from foreign governments and individuals? Barely reported. The selling of the Lincoln bedroom and other similar activities that are a no-no? A giant snore from the media.
Today, the Clintons are once again embroiled in scandal. Hillary Clinton, when Secretary of State, did not use the State Department’s computers and e-mail system. She used her own. And promptly destroyed ALL of it, servers and e-mails alike, after the State Department requested them. Then we begin to learn that donations to the Clinton Global Initiative and Foundation had strings attached to them while she was Secretary of State. Donate money to the Clinton Foundation and good deals can be had.
One of those deals involved uranium, a Ukrainian businessman, Russia and Vladimir Putin, and millions of dollars of unreported donations to the Clinton Foundation. The sale of a U.S. company to a Russian firm, with ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin, required the Secretary of State to sign off on it, which Hillary Clinton gladly did. And then miraculously millions of dollars came pouring into the Clinton Foundation coffers from entities associated with the deals – all of which were not reported as required by law to the IRS.
Following the horrific destructive earthquake in Haiti in 2010, if you were a company that wanted to help rebuild, feed, clothe, etc. the folks of Haiti, it’s also revealed that you had to do business with the Clintons. In a book titled, “Clinton Cash,” by Peter Schweizer, the author investigates the tangle of money, politics and personal interest that has come to characterize the Clintons’ interactions around the world, says that, “What quickly became apparent to many people was that if you … wanted to do business in Haiti, you had to have relationships with a Clinton. That was absolutely key.”
Perhaps the most celebrated project of all in Haiti was Caracol Industrial Park. Its grand opening was as glitzy as a Hollywood premiere.
“You had Bill Clinton there,” said Schweizer. “You had Hillary Clinton there. You had Donna Karan, the fashion designer. You had Ben Stiller. You had Sean Penn.”
The anchor tenant of Caracol Industrial Park is a Korean manufacturer who is also a big Clinton supporter.
And then there was Digicel. It helped create a system to transfer money via cell phones. In the six months running up to September 2012, it took in more than $50 million in revenue in Haiti. Digicel is run by Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien. He set up lucrative speeches for Bill Clinton and donated millions of dollars of his own money to the Clintons’ foundation.
The book “Clinton Cash,” also examines all the crazy quid pro quo deals with the Clinton Foundation while Hillary was Secretary of State.
A lot of stuff has been coming out for the media to chew on regarding the leading Democratic candidate for president. But as all these allegations and information come forward where is the mainstream press? While the NY Times and Newsweek magazine have reported some of the findings as well as revelations from the “Clinton Cash” book, for the most part the media has been asleep at the wheel – much like it was in the 1990s and like it has been for six years under President Obama.
How much coverage has there been on this from the major network evening newscasts on ABC, CBS and NBC? None to just mere seconds. How about on shows like Today, Good Morning America and CBS Morning Show? Again, none to a few seconds. What about our own Chicago Tribune? Sorry, won’t find much any of these events in the newspaper or on their Website. Local newscasts? You can stop laughing now. Even Newsweek magazine buried their Clinton donation story and the lead to the article spoke more about ammunition for Clinton critics than it did the revelations about the quid pro quo and favor-inducing donations.
There is no doubting that if Hillary Clinton was a Republican or if these coincidental donations and quid pro quos happened to a Republican the media would be all over it and there would be calls for special investigations and possibly even a special investigator. Now it can change, but so far the media has turned the other cheek when it comes to Democratic scandals and the Clintons. Just like in the 1990s!
