In a November 29 interview with The Guardian, former Spice Girl and current X Factor UK host, Melanie Brown (popularly referred to as “Mel B”) set the record straight on all the rumors surrounding her love life and marriage.
On dating a woman
As with other topics, Mel B is an open book when it comes to her previous relationships. When asked about her former relationship with Crista Parker–a “woman with children at the same LA school as [Mel B’s daughter] Phoenix”–Mel B didn’t balk at confirming the romance.
“I did have a four-year relationship with a woman,” she says. “I had a girlfriend. So what?…I will be the first one to compliment a woman, to say to my husband, ‘Oh my God, look at her legs’; or ‘Doesn’t she look stunning?’ I do think women are gorgeous. Crazy but gorgeous.”
On Eddie Murphy
The funny man and the former Spice Girl made headlines in 2006 when it was revealed that Murphy was the father of Mel B’s daughter, Angel. Mel B had become pregnant after a whirlwind romance with Murphy.
Mel B spoke of feeling “lost” during the media frenzy surrounding her affair with Murphy and finding solace in friend and now-husband Stephen Belafonte.
“It really tore me up, because I didn’t want to blab my side of the story, and I haven’t and I still won’t, out of respect for Angel and out of respect I still have for him. I wouldn’t want to do that to anybody. So I got really down. Stephen, who I’ve known for 15 years, stepped in as a really good friend and said, ‘It’s fine, you’ll get through this.’”
Despite the heartache, Mel B and Murphy are now on good terms.
“We go over there as a family, we have dinners together, everything is fine… now. He’s a great guy. Look, we fell in love with each other, we had a gorgeous child together. Some of my friends don’t even see their exes and they’ve got kids together.”
On her marriage
Mel B praises her husband and denies the rumors that the two have an “open relationship”.
“No [we don’t have an open marriage], me and my husband are very tight and solid,” she says.
The “For Once in my Life” singer also addressed her previous sentiments that she and Belafonte are both “perverts” and are intimate up to five times a day.
“Let me put it this way, we’re just very sexually compatible in every way. We think very much alike, and we get turned on by the same things,” she says. As for the “five times a day” comment? “OK, not five times every day. Not today, cos I’ve been at work all day.”
