Students across the country are letting First Lady Michelle Obama know, once again, that they still hate school lunches which have her impact on them. On Friday, the students took to Twitter to post photos of their disgusting school lunches. The photos were accompanied by the hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama, according to Business Insider on Friday, and the sarcastic thank you to Mrs. Obama caught on.
Michelle Obama is front and center with the USDA’s new guidelines for school lunches. The young people who are subjected to the often-times unattractive and less-than-tasty lunches know that her dealings with her governmental health initiative have a lot to do with what they’re getting served in their schools’ cafeterias. The result has been a bit of embarrassing revenge on social media, as revealed in a Yahoo! News piece.
As for the comments that accompanied the photos of some pretty disgustingly-looking food, it is clear that today’s students known how to express themselves. Sarcasm seems to be communicative skill students have picked up on quite readily as well. One student wrote that he had a very healthy lunch today as the apple definitely made up for the mystery mush. Of course, there was a photo of the disgusting mystery mush of which he was referring to, and he hashtagged his message on Twitter with #ThanksMichelleObama. The underlying message of the tweet was quite disturbingly revealing, of course. The apple and that concoction of mystery mush is all that kid was getting for lunch.
One guy smiled in his photo while holding his lunch plate upside down and his mystery meal stuck to the plate. Of course, he included #ThanksMichelleObama with the photo. Photo after photo revealed a platter of food that most adults would complain about as well. One girl wrote: “My school no longer has a salt shaker, which was the only thing saving our bland school lunch, because ‘salt is bad’ #ThanksMichelleObama.” One guy posted a worm crawling out of his apple and wrote: “Today a worm popped out of those ‘nutritious’ apples we get at school jaja #ThanksMichelleObama.”
Some tweets displayed anger as a Twitter user named Hank wrote: “Nobody elected you @FLOTUS, where do you get off telling people what they can eat ya commie?! #ThanksMichelleObama.” According to PopSugar, the sarcastic move by the school children today has, once again, raised some serious concerns about what is being served in the average public school cafeteria these days. Yes, children have complained about school lunches through the decades. But let’s be honest. For the first time in history, it appears that kids have some real concerns here.
Searching for #ThanksMichelleObama on Twitter brings up comments and photos going back to at least 2013. Today, the topic just seemed to be more trendy – more viral. Not stopping at Twitter, some of the students put their posts on their Facebook pages, too. Hopefully all of this doesn’t mean that the problem is growing over the past year or so. But, it is safe to say that the discontent is growing.
