Mill Creek has cornered the market bringing classic films and TV shows to DVD and Blu-ray. Two of their most recent releases bring the iconic Three Stooges films that debuted between the 40s and 60s in two complete collections. This collection features 1961s The Three Stooges Meet Hercules, 1963s The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze and 1964s The Outlaws is Coming.
With The Three Stooges Meet Hercules the trio get thrust back in time in a time machine to ancient Greece where they find themselves going head to head with Hercules. This is yet another film that has an entire story wrapped around the chaos that the Stooges bring. Curly Joe has lost the crew cut and gone for the fully shaved head to look even more like the famed Curly. While they are wrapped around this non-comedic world, they are dead center and given the chance to unleash their usual brand of goofball antics. There are plenty of the usual gags that fans expect, but some fun action with Hercules throwing all manners of creatures and animals in every direction. This was their most profitable film that was released and despite some bad performances by some of the actors still manages to be some fun.
In The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze the boys set sail for a globe hopping trip after being enlisted by a con man who needs to win a bet. This film is much like the previous film in giving the boys plenty to do wrapped around a serious story. Here they not only bring their usual hijinx they even reenact some of their most famous routines that included the blind as a bat maharajah and the weasel song that were originated by Curly, but here redone with Curly Joe. One of the most entertaining moments was the segment in China where they come face to face with Chinese stooges. Sure these new takes on the routines are far from the greatness that Curly delivered, but Curly Joe does a decent job making them his own and in the end is a pretty fun film.
The final film in the collection, The Outlaws is Coming! takes the stooges back to the West where they find themselves being sought after by every gunslinger in history. This film once again slaps the trio right into the mix and makes it all the more entertaining seeing them working alongside Adam West who gets a chance to flex some funny moments as well. In addition to the stooges and West this film also features long time Stooge flunky Emil Sitka as well as funny man Henry Gibson. This film once again rekindles some of their famous bits and plays up the over the top silly nature of it all as you would expect. This managed to be one of the more entertaining of the bunch and perfect wrap up to the collection.
It is likely impossible find anyone out there that would consider themselves a fan of the movies or Curly Joe, but there is still just something entertaining about seeing the boys do their thing no matter what iteration you get. These films are far from perfection, but they are a part of the iconic career of these legendary comedians and deserve a place on the shelf of any hardcore fan.
