The Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America announced late yesterday that it is planning a march across the Lake Washington I-90 floating bridge from Seattle to Mercer Island on Saturday, May 9, and already Second Amendment activists are talking about a counter demonstration.
According to the Moms group, the march begins at Seattle’s Sam Smith Park at 11 a.m. and ends two hours later at the Mercer Island Lid Park. If this turns out like the Moms demonstration against the National Rifle Association last Saturday in Nashville, it will be rather eclipsed by the attendance at, say, this weekend’s Washington Arms Collectors monthly gun show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds, where thousands of people will gather.
At Saturday’s demonstration, held a couple of blocks from the NRA convention at Music City Center, about 120 people showed up. That paled in comparison to the tens of thousands who attended the convention on just that single day, and the 78,865 who came through the doors over the entire three-day event. That was the second-highest attendance on record, according to NRA’s Catherine Mortensen.
But marching across the bridge could cause traffic slowdowns even if the marchers stick to the walkway on the north side. A counter-demonstration by Second Amendment activists – many of them certain to be open carry proponents – might compound matters.
Robert Arco with the Gun Rights Coalition and American Rights Movement already posted the following on Facebook. He believes this planned march could provide an opportunity for activists to show and tell their side of things.
“Sometimes opportunities are just too good to pass up. It appears MDA is going to do a march across the I-90 bridge on May 9th at 11 a.m. Wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity to go meet the moms, give them an armed escort and wish them a happy mother’s day. Here is what I am thinking – time for patriots to RISE to the occasion
*** Setup our own rally and line the bridge walkway with open carry activists, patriots from all over
*** Invite servicemen and law enforcement to participate (LEO’s can also protect us from the mom’s..lol)
*** Invite our supportive representatives
*** Invite the NRA and SAF
*** Have our own signs that say “MOMS HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTECT THEIR CHILDREN WITH GUNS” …”I HAVE THE 2nd AMENDMENT RIGHT TO PROTECT MY MOM AND THE MOTHER OF MY CHIDLREN” etc.
*** FILM IT AND IF THE MOMS GET NASTY WE HAVE IT CAPTURED
*** OUR ONLY WORDS – Happy Mother’s Day
What do you folks think? Should we setup an event ?”
Arco is already stirring up quite a conversation about this on social media. Several activists seem keen to the idea. It’s a First Amendment kind of thing.
MEANWHILE, another gun-free zone failure happened Monday at Wayne Community College in North Carolina. Police in Florida have arrested Kenneth Morgan Stancil III in connection with yesterday’s slaying of college print shop director Ron Lane, according to Reuters.
Lane was gunned down yesterday on campus, but when the suspect was taken into custody, he only reportedly was armed with a knife. It is not known how he made it from North Carolina to a Florida beach, where he was found sleeping.
Stancil was reportedly “dismissed” from his job at the school last month. He had apparently worked for Lane when he was a student at the school.
