I love Mythology. I like reading stories that have been passed down through the ages. One of my favorite stories is the Twelve Labors of Hercules. So you can imagine I was very excited to see a Hercules movie coming out. But did the film do justice to the amazing tale? Or was it more of a whimper than a bang. I think that the movie in the end is a little less impressive than most people were expecting.
The basics of the story are that Hercules has completed his twelve labors and has become a mercenary. He gets tasked with defending the Thracians from an supernatural army. But are they really supernatural beings or not? And why is an army trying its best to destroy the King of Thrace? I’m not going to tell you here, if you want to know find out on your own.
As much as I enjoy the stories of Hercules, I was slightly saddened by the fact that his twelve labors were mentioned only briefly. Add to the fact that the action was few and far between and you see one of the problems. You would expect a movie about Hercules to have tons of displays of his superhuman nature. And his fellow mercenaries, while they were unique, they did very little in the grand scheme of things. I’m not saying there was no action. The action, when it happens, is very well plotted and had great moments for both Hercules and his band of merry men and one woman.
Another gripe i had was with one scene. The goddess Hera tries to kill Hercules when he is a baby by sending two poisonous snakes to kill him in his sleep. They are some of the worst computer generated things I have ever seen. They used real snakes for when they crawled on the ground , but when they pop up they look like a class project CG creation, not to mention the fact they were bright green. That’s a very picky thing to point out but somebody had to approve them.
One really great thing about the movie is that all the actors give good performances. Dwayne Johnson was really a great Hercules, and you actually believe he could do the things that happen in the movie. Ian McShane as the crazy member of the group who claims to speak with the gods is awesome.
I did have a good time watching the movie I guess I was hoping for a different movie. But still the film earns a middle of the road Three Stars.
I have added a link to the film’s website here. Its parental advisory page here. And a link to the Amazon page where you can purchase a copy if you are so inclined.here.
