Stretch marks are marks or stripes found on the abdomen due to the tightness of skin during pregnancy or obesity. They are caused due to massive stretching of the body, which may be due to body building, reaching puberty, sudden weight gain and hormonal therapy. If someone in your family already has had stretch marks, it is highly likely that you will have them to, meaning they do effect genetics.
Ways to Treat Stretch Marks
There are many surgical and cosmetics ways to treat stretch marks. You can use home remedies to treat stretch marks with essential oils to keep the skin hydrated and make it more stretchable. Some of the essential oils are Geranium, lavender and rose. When it comes to diet, an increased intake of Vitamin C by taking supplements can decrease stretch marks.
Laser treatment is also available for stretch marks. The new marks that have not yet been turned silver can be treated by Pulse dye laser treatment however; it works best on the treatment of fair colored people. For dark skinned people, pulse dye laser treatment can be used to make the skin smoother on the edges.
Tummy tuck is one of the best ways to treat stretch marks. It is one of the most expensive treatments available and can cause pre-op complications as well. Tummy tuck has at least three to four weeks recovery period, which can be quite painful and difficult for the patient.
Fractional Laser Resurfacing
One of the newest ways to treat stretch marks is fractional laser resurfacing; it uses scattered light as a treatment procedure that makes the wounds microscopic. It works on all skin tones and reduces stretch marks up to seventy five percent. However, it is extremely expensive, therefore, not affordable by all.
All these treatments are most effective when these marks are at their earlier stages and appear red; once they turn silver it becomes very difficult to get rid of them.
Keep your skin hydrated with creams
If you don’t want to go for surgical procedures then the basic tip to take care of your stretch marks is by keeping your skin hydrated. One method is by using creams with ingredients that increase the production of collagen that hydrates the skin. You should use these creams at least three to four times a day to keep the skin hydrated because your skin can stretch without any marks when it is fully hydrated.
Keep your skin moisturized
The best way to recover from or avoid stretch marks is by using a moisturizer. It is a common observation that stretch marks are less likely to appear after herbal moisturizers are used, because these herbal moisturizers increase the elasticity of the skin. The most useful moisturizers are the ones that contain cocoa butter, aloe Vera, shea butter and wheat germ oil.
One such cream for treating stretch marks is Retin-A. It produces collagen and helps to even out your skin tone. However, it becomes ineffective when it comes to taking care of old stretch marks. Moreover, Retin-A should be avoided by women who are pregnant or nursing because it can cause complications. You should also try to avoid the sun when wearing Retin-A.
Glycolic acid can also be an effective treatment for your marked skin. It belongs to the family of chemicals that can be used as skin peels. Glycolic acid is a good way to increase the production of collagen that makes the skin more elastic. It is safe to use during pregnancy but, you must be careful when you go out in sun while wearing creams that contain Glyco Acid. The parts of the body where Glycolic acid is used should be covered in the sun.
Other Useful Creams
Glycolic acid and Retin A can also be used in combination to treat stretch marks. Creams with Vitamin E oils are also very helpful as they are good hydrating agents; they are safe to be used during pregnancy as well. Creams containing Gotu kola also play a significant role in avoiding stretch marks especially when used with vitamin E extract. This cream hydrates the skin and hence avoids itching and pain.

They can often be complicated and cause major pain and unrest. These procedures are also often followed by extremely painful recovery periods. Home remedies can be used but they are mostly not that significant effective in the treatment. Therefore, it is much more safe and easier to use creams to treat the nuisance of stretch marks. Not only are creams effective, but they are also affordable and mostly without any side effects or painful recovery periods.
