I first developed TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) after a bad car crash a few years gave me whiplash. The jaw pain was excruciating—some days it hurt to eat, it hurt to talk, and it even hurt to sneeze, because my mouth opens suddenly when I do. I found myself popping over-the-counter pain pills before every meal and speaking much less than usual, though my boyfriend said he quite enjoyed that aspect. I felt like I was just chasing the pain instead of fixing it. Eventually, I grew tired of the recurring pain cycle and probably destroying my liver so I started looking for other options.
Searching for a way to bring relief from TMJ pain was not really an easy task. There seems to be so much “fluff” content on the web that it’s hard to get to what actually works. It seems like a lot of dentists like to casually recommend surgery for TMJ. I think this seemed Ludacris to do surgery on my jaw without first trying some other more natural options. I ended up trying a few different techniques.
1. Special jaw exercises specifically designed for TMJ.
2. Regular visits to a chiropractor.
3. A natural TMJ relief supplement.
TMJ Jaw Exercises
These were loosely recommended all over the web. I ended up following this guide on how to do the exercises. It was fairly simple. 2-3 times per day I just did these mini exercises for about a total of 5 min. It was fairly simple. Did it bring relief? Some. I would usually feel better for a few hours, but then the inflammation would come back. Sometimes the pain was worse than before because I had irritated the jaw more than usual.
I read about chiropractic treatments for TMJ from some online forums. I didn’t really understand how a chiropractor was supposed to help, but I was willing to try anything. Almost immediately on my first visit I was impressed. The chiropractor quickly pointed out the area where I was feeling the pain without me specifically showing him. I came to learn that misalignment in the upper spine can cause tension that transfers down into the jaw.
In retrospect this actually makes perfect sense. My TMJ started as a result of whiplash, so of course it should all be connected. Three times a week for an entire month I religiously went to his office for treatment. I was definitely starting to notice an improvement, but the pain was frequently still there. It seemed move in a cycle. After he treated me I felt great, then the next day the pain would came back. After a month of this I finally told the chiropractor. What he told me made it all finally make sense. He told me how there could be an inflammation cycle in the jaw. He described how immediately after a treatment everything was positioned as it should and I should feel great. But then afterwards the tension that has been built up returns to my jaw joint, and with that tension comes inflammation. Then he recommended I try a specially designed natural supplement for TMJ to include along with his treatments.
A Natural TMJ Relief Supplement
This is where things finally started looking up. He instructed me to buy The TMJ Pill on Amazon.com. The chiropractor explained that the supplement was not some miracle cure for TMJ, but was instead the perfect add-on to other treatments. The TMJ Pill works in a few different ways. It works to gently relax the tension in the jaw muscles, it works as a natural anti-inflammatory to stop the pain and swelling, and finally it has an ingredient that can help rebuild some tissues that might be needed. The biggest thing is that it helps to stop the pain cycle that I’ve been dealing with all along.
The Chiropractor was very clear that this needed to be taken along with performing TMJ exercises and continuing my treatments with him. He described how the chiropractic treatments would help place the spine where it needs to be, the exercises will strengthen the jaw muscles to keep it properly aligned, and the TMJ supplement would help end the cycle of inflammation and tension. A three-step process.
After about 2-3 months of this treatment I was able to fully recover. I finally had ongoing relief from my TMJ pain. Every once in a while it still acts up a little, but I just restart the exercises and the supplement immediately and within a couple of days it’s gone again. I’m careful to start the treatments back as soon as I see the first signs of the pain coming back as I want to avoid the cycle from returning.
In retrospect I am so happy with my decision to avoid surgery. Taking a more natural and holistic approach turned out to be a fabulous decision!
