Tired of Tinder and the online dating scene? If you’re looking for a change of pace from all the pro-technology dating and would rather meet people the old-fashioned way – face-to-face, then you should check out Scenergy Dating.
Scenergy Dating (a mash-up of the dating scene and synergy, I suspect) – has just launched its service in L.A., after debuting in various cities in Texas. The idea behind it is simple: its founder wants people to have a more enjoyable time meeting each other, claiming that traditional matchmaking services are too expensive and online dating is too frustrating for the average dater. Most people want to spend their time meeting people more organically.
He’s right. Dating services (including apps like Hinge and Willow), online dating companies, matchmaking and speed dating services have long searched for the elusive “organic” way to meet new people. Scenergy offers both individualized matchmaking as well as singles events that are open to the public. But the company’s founder is quick to dismiss its offering as typical.
“When people hear Scenergy Dating is a dating and matchmaking service, they think annoying speed dating events or high pressure sales tactics. We are much different than that,” said founder and CEO, Christopher Feliciano. “In a world that has become addicted to technology, we are spreading the idea of returning to making a natural first impression.”
Scenergy events do not allow singles to be left on their own to stand around and talk to their friends or stare at their phones. Instead, there are Scenergy hosts who help with introductions and ice-breakers to get people more engaged. Also, Scenergy rewards those who participate in their festivities. For instance, the company offers a “best dressed” night with contests, which encourages people to dress up. A “Mystery Singles” night includes a type of scavenger hunt that encourages attendees to ask other participants for clues in order to win prizes.
But at the end of the day – a service’s success is based on how many people are using it. Tinder has taken off because of the sheer amount of people who are on it every day, because what is most valuable to daters, right or wrong – is choice. If Scenergy takes off in L.A., it will be because more and more people find value in meeting people this way.
The first event in Los Angeles is December 3rd at Brickyard Pub in Hollywood. It is $30 at the door, or $20 if you order via their website.
