Mad Max was originally revealed back at E3 2013 during Sony’s press conference and with the game’s Sept. 1 release date approaching with each day that passes, more information begins to surface. Today, Warner Bros. released a brand-new trailer for Mad Max and the video showcases a number of things players can expect to see when the game launches.
It seems that during the beginning of Mad Max players will start without a car and that could be one of the first things they’ll need to acquire. As you can see in the gameplay above, there is a palpable Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham feel to the Mad Max gameplay. Avalanche Studios is certainly referencing some interesting aspects of those franchises, much like Shadow of Mordor did with its combat system.
As people progress early on, they’ll need to pick the type of car they want for their Magnum Opus. They’ll make their selection at the “Graveyard,” and cars that are available range from Death Rattle to Wild Hunt to Shovel Face. We already knew this and it was confirmed by the trailer that players will upgrade their vehicle as they collect various resources throughout the wasteland of Mad Max.
Among the upgrades will be things like a Level 2 Ramming Grill, for example. This particular item allows players to increase their ramming power by 20 percent, while reducing head-on collision damage by 12 percent. Various stats will help people make informed choices on what upgrades they want to choose and which ones they don’t want. Those stats include Attack, Defense, Weaponry, Top Speed, Acceleration, Handling, Boost, Grinding, Repair Speed and Boarder Defense.
Mad Max himself will also be upgradeable to a certain extent. Things such as Fist Damage, Jacket Armor, Parry Ability, Ammo Inventory, Shotgun and Skills are upgradeable items. An example of an item that will help make Max more deadly is the Level 3 Knuckledusters that provides 30 percent more damage to enemies.
Again, the combat closely resembles that of the Batman Arkham series and it looks like something that will gratify players as they hone their combat skills. A number of other abilities or skills that Mad Max has is a wheel that has certain upgrades. Things such as Intuition helps improve Max’s melee weapon skill, making certain items last longer before they break.
Ammo for guns evidently will be scarce throughout the wasteland, so it seems that melee combat will be a core element of Mad Max. Driving looks to be a blast, pun intended, with explosions and car ramming heavily featured in the trailer above. While it was a brief shot we saw, upgrading keeps looks to be part of the Mad Max upgrading process. Finally, the weather and world itself look to be an element people must be mindful of as they drive across the open-world.
Mad Max is speeding towards its Sept. 1 release date. It will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
