Happy New Year, Baltimore. Congratulations on another year of beautiful anime and stunning manga. Here’s hoping that 2015 brings even bigger and better serials for us to enjoy. May the fireworks and last day of celebrating 2014 be as exciting and memorable. The Baltimore New Year’s Eve Spectacular kicks off at 9PM at the Inner Harbor Amphitheater. At the stroke of midnight, the fireworks and lights will dye the sky in festival colors coupled by the countdown with Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Oh course, just like the year, a new beginning is coming. In terms of anime, Naruto seems like it will have a new beginning despite its end.
Naruto was a series that helped define the generation of otakus around the world. For a lot of people, it was the first anime that they had seen and one of the longer running ones they had read. At the end of this year, The Last: Naruto the Movie was announced. The movie appears to follow the end of the manga and (stop if you haven’t finished reading the manga because this is a spoiler) the official start of Naruto and Hinata’s relationship that ends with them having kids. Of course, there’s also this whole story of kidnapping Hinata’s sister, dropping the moon on earth, and someone wanting the Hyuuga’s eyes. Something about Naruto always comes down to someone out in the world wanting to take someone’s eyes and doing something nefarious with them. No one’s own eyes are ever good enough. The Last: Naruto the Movie was opened December 6th in Japan and is hopefully due to arrive in the US around February 20th of next year.
But apparently, what was thought of as the end may not actually be. According to OtakuUSA magazine, the series is due at least one more film, just with a new protagonist. The son of Naruto, Boruto (or Bolt as seen in the last chapter of Naruto) is set to make his dad proud. Let’s face it though, Boruto has some big shoes to fill after what his father has done in the entire series, especially if you consider the last movie. Boruto ~The Naruto Movie~ is set to come out in Japan in August.
The time between November 10th, when Naruto Shippuden, and August 2015 is rather lengthy, but fret not. In the span of time between the two dates, a new Naruto serial anime is due to launch. Supposedly in January of 2015, “Naruto no Senaka ~Nakama no Kiseki~” (The Back of Naruto ~The Miracle of Comrades~) is to be released, picking up where Naruto Shippuden ended. Though, to be honest, picking up where Shippuden left off is a very vague statement. It can be taken as it will follow Naruto post-hokage status, looking at his life and maybe how he recovered his arm. Or it could very well follow his friends around as they support Naruto as hokage. The last chapter of the manga left a lot of area for story as we all wondered how and what everyone is doing. Is that really Rock Lee’s kid? Is Ten Ten really just a shop owner? What’s with the giant city behind the Hidden Village? And what happened to Gaara?
So many question to answer going into the new year. There are so many potential answers to be had. Here’s hoping we all enjoy them as they come. It is nice to know that Naruto won’t go so quietly into the dark. Happy New Year to you all.
