Nicki Minaj shared something very personal about her life in a recent interview and the event has haunted her since her teen years. As a kid still in high school, Minaj became pregnant and opted for an abortion at that time. In her own words today that abortion has “haunted me all my life.”
According to the Rolling Stone on Dec. 30, Minaj was young and pregnant by an older man at the time. She was still attending Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, so she had the rest of her life ahead of her.
Finding out that she was pregnant was devastating to Minaj and although her decision to have an abortion is something she has to live with, it was still the right thing to do at the time, said the “Anaconda” singer. Terminating that pregnancy stirred up emotions in Minaj that stayed with her and those haunting emotions have found their way into her music.
According to AOL News, Minaj’s baby brother, Caiah, reminds her of the child she would have had. This is apparent in her song “All Things Go” from Pinkprint, her latest album. In her song she has hopes for her brother heading off to college, just as she would have for her own child who would be close to age 16 today.
The lyrics in the song compare her brother to the baby she didn’t have, “I want Caiah to go to college, just to say we did it,” she rhymes. “My child with Aaron would have been 16 any minute / so in some ways I feel like Caiah is the both of them / It’s like he’s Caiah’s little angel, looking over him.”
Minaj is not alone, both women and men report how the decision of having an abortion, which seemed like the best move for everyone at the time, has actually haunted them the rest of their lives. Many women who thought that having an abortion would end a problem, which is an unwanted pregnancy, find out that the abortion started problems with emotional turmoil.
Live Action News.org reported on the pain and regret that both women and men experience after making that fleeting decision to end a pregnancy with an abortion. For many that emotional pain will be with them the rest of their lives.
In their article they talked about a website called Love Matters that was created for this reason. The website offers up stories about the regrets and feelings that come along with the decision to terminate a pregnancy. Love Matters, “shares the stories of the people who went into abortion thinking it was their only way out of a scary situation, only to realize it was the beginning of the worst time of their lives.”
Regret for that abortion can happen at any time during your life. It can start while you are undergoing he procedure or hit you years down the line. The website urges any woman contemplating an abortion to “speak to women who have been there.”
Nicki Minaj is haunted by the abortion she had 16-years-ago and she has carried this with her for years. She is not alone, women from all walks of life report that having an abortion isn’t the end of a problem. It is the beginning of regret, guilt and an uncomfortable feeling they carry with them for the rest of their days.
