This isn’t the first time that the NY Flower Child Nitty Scott MC has been the subject of conversation on this site. The last time I wrote on her I was blessed to have Ms Scott actually drop a few comments to fully elaborate her current position while replying to another opposing comment that was posted on my site. She appreciated my piece which was cool. At the time of that post folk were just starting to get a peek at Nitty Scott the woman. Instagram was lit a blaze with the new imagery that the Boom Box followers were privy too through the year 2014. The eyes had candy for days but were the ears left starving?
In the midst of everything Nitty’s greatly anticipated Art of Chill dropped. It was a very honest, open and reflective LP. The plan was to present a full range collective of videos and music to give us the full “Chill” experience. We saw images of behind the scene video shots but eventually the buzz started fading and we were left asking what happened?
Rolling through the winter and into the new year Nitty has done a number of interviews enlightening the people to what stalled the plans for the Art of Chill. She opened up to the need to clear house and just deal with real life. In an era where microwaveable, disposable music is the norm, Nitty took a step back to get herself in order vs pushing out her work in a half ass manner. So, while the music plans continue to build and bubble we have Nitty in magazines, featured on major media sites and all on the Internets addressing femininity, sexuality and her views on evolving within this industry.
Honestly I find it refreshing. I haven’t seen an artist go through their growth process in this manner in quite a while. It reminds me a bit of Eve who started as the gritty pit bull in a skirt but grew into so much more across the entertainment spectrum. Super-stardom is something that Nitty Scott can very easily claim. She’s articulate. She’s gold in front of the camera. She has the full package. It’s there for the taking IF she wants it. That level of success may not be the goal. Success is relative to each person and for many just providing a quality living doing what you love is the objective.
Let’s step back a minute. When the mainstream focus turns to women in Hip Hop its one of two things. What is Nicky doing? How is Iggy putting her foot farther in her mouth. There’s a Grand Canyon sized space for more content, deeper conversation and additional voices for the culture. I stand steady to my belief that Ms Scott can be that flame to reignite Hip Hop’s respect for lady MC’s and bring that much-needed balance back. That is the reply I’ve given to various people who know I’m a fan and have recently asked me point-blank. “So what do you think of the new sexed up Nitty Scott?” Be clear the images and photo spreads are amazing. On a surface level you’ll hear no complaints from me if Ms Scott continues dropping visual bombs on IG, but as Spring rolls into Summer I pray the “Bae Goddess” has some serious musical surprises for us.
The game needs her and I feel she’s primed for a takeover. A new fresh face to bring us style and substance is what I envision when I think of Nitty Scott MC. In the meantime we’re patiently waiting for the next stage of the Flower Child’s growth.
