Northern Highlands defeated Immaculate Conception (Lodi), 49-45, in double over-time at the Hoops 4 Autism tournament hosted by River Dell High School.
Immaculate Conception took an early lead, but with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter Northern Highlands earned their first lead of the game, 10-8. At the end of the first quarter NH led 12-10. The MVP of the game, Melissa Heath, finished with 2 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 17 points. She was able to cut through the middle of the paint, post up in the middle, and score. She was also able to hit shots from the 3-point line.
At the half-time Immaculate Conception led 23-20. IC’s Samantha Fuehring proved why she is one of the top recruits in the United States. She dazzled the crowd with several tough-to-make shots, including a drop step that tied the game to send IC into their second over time with NH. She finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds.
The third quarter ended in a tie, 33-33. NH’s Caroline Lovisolo worked really hard inside the paint to diminish IC’s second shots on offense. She ended with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, and 9 points.
With 3:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, NH had the lead, 40-38. NH’s Rachel Jubelt did a good job playing pressure defense and pushing the ball up court. With 1:11 IC’s Fuehring scored to give IC the lead, 41-40. With :40.9 remaining NH’s Lovisolo hit a foul shot to tie the game, 41-41. Both teams had opportunities to score to break the time, but all missed. The fourth quarter ended in a tie, sending the teams into their first overtime.
To start the first over time Northern Highlands secured the ball. They ran two minutes off the clock before attempting their first shot, which was good. They led 43-41. IC’s Khay’la Latimer came down to tie the game again with a great drive to the basket. With :12.4 remaining NH scored, 45-43. IC had a great inbounds play that allowed IC’s Latimer to earn a great assist to Fuehring to tie the game, 45-45. Latimer did a great job distributing and scoring. She finished with 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 15 points.
In the second overtime NH’s scored four more points. Although they had several attempts to score, none of IC’s shots fell.
A few other players worth mentioning: NH’s Tori Reich was a major force in preventing IC from getting offensive rebounds. She played tough inside. Emily Bonifacic readied herself in the outlet and protected the ball from being stolen during traps. IC’s Breyenne Bellerand was strong with the ball inside. Her fast feet and hands enable her to get out to contest outside shots. Jasmine Gee was also a big force inside, earning 10 rebounds.
