Funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) runs out on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015. On Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, Mark Landler of the New York Times posted an article titled Shoppers Cautioned After Threat Against Mall of America.
Jeh Johnson, Secretary of the DHS, told CNN on Feb. 22, 2015 that there was no specific threat identified against the Mall of America (Mall) beyond a video posting of a an unidentifiable person that is alleged to be a member of a Somali terrorist group, Al Shabab.
Secretary Johnson had this to say regarding the threat, as quoted in the Times article.
If anyone is planning to go to the Mall of America today, they have got to be particularly careful. There will be enhanced security there, but public vigilance, public awareness and public caution in situations like this is particularly important, and it’s the environment we’re in, frankly.
This is the environment that DHS creates by raising terror alerts without specific causes. We are taught as children to tell the truth. The truth is that this latest DHS announcement is not about a terrorist threat, but getting funding to continue its existence.
The true reason for this latest flurry of warnings was revealed by Johnson on several TV programs on Sunday. Johnson reminded the viewers that the DHS’s funding expires at the end of this week. Congress is deadlocked on funding DHS as leverage to get the reversal of President Obama’s executive order to stop deporting five million illegal immigrants. A second truth is that members of Congress are acting in their own interests, not those they were elected to represent.
An internal report issued by the DHS identified internal groups like the right-wing Sovereign Citizens as a greater threat for terrorist activities in the US than foreign terrorists. CNN ran a news item by Wes Bruer and Evan Perez on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 titled DHS intelligence report warns of domestic right-wing terror threat.
DHS strengthens the ability of foreign terrorist groups to recruit potential terrorists that reside in the US through these false alarms. Naïve terrorist recruits seek publicity and martyrdom that the DHS is providing to justify its existence. The DHS has lost public trust because of false alarms, wholesale destruction of privacy, and assistance in creating an atmosphere of terror to justify its own existence.
While there are many that subscribe to the motto “In God We Trust.”, that trust does not extend to DHS and government in general. DHS needs to conduct a war on terror, not create a war of terror on US citizens and the global population. The Golden Rule needs to be reaffirmed for the government as a whole. DHS needs to be protecting us from terrorists without creating terror among the citizens.
