A nun in her 70s was gang raped by a group of seven or eight men. The elderly nun reportedly attempted to stop the men from robbing a Christian missionary school in Eastern India. She has since been hospitalized. The men escaped, stealing cash, cell phones, a computer and a camera belonging to the school. They are being sought by police.
Writes The Associated Press on March 14, via Fox News: “The attack early Saturday is the latest crime to focus attention on the scourge of sexual violence in India. A police officer says the nun was hospitalized in serious condition after the attack, which was committed by seven to eight robbers at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in West Bengal state’s Nadia district.”
A dozen armed men commandeered the convent, tied up security guards with rope and began to ransack the school. When the nun, reportedly the oldest of the women and the sister superior, attempted to intervene, she was hauled away, gang raped and beaten.
“Christians in Bengal are deeply anguished by the shameful act of violence on an elderly and ailing religious sister at Ranaghat,” said Thomas D’Souza, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kolkata. “We would like to register our horror and shock at this barbaric act which has occurred in our tolerant and inclusive state of West Bengal.”
Adds the Huffington Post: “Scores of angry students, their parents and teachers blocked a nearby highway and railroad tracks for several hours demanding swift police action leading to the arrest of the culprits…India has a long history of tolerance for sexual violence, but the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in New Delhi caused outrage across the nation.”
Back on March 6, a violent mob, intent on doling out judgment, kidnapped an accused rapist after busting into the man’s jail cell in the state of Nagaland, India. A frenzied mob, hundreds strong and armed with makeshift weapons, met outside the police station to stage a protest rally. Dozens of them overpowered police, hauled the man from his jail cell, stripped him naked and dragged the accused through the streets while residents pelted him with rocks. He was later hung on a fence with a stake rammed through his genitals.
The man was identified as a 35-year-old used car dealer, who was arrested after allegedly repeatedly raping a 19-year-old student from a local women’s college. A jeering crowd gathered in the streets of Dimapur, the largest city in Nagaland, throwing stones as the chained man was dragged by a vehicle for approximately four miles. The man’s home was burned and his shop was destroyed as well, according to reports.
