Since Barack Obama became the President in January of 2008, the Ultra-Conservatives in the Republican Party have frivolously spent the time, money and patience of the American people trying to justify their hatred for the first African-American President. They have questioned the legality of his birth, stalled legislation, and even shut down the government in an attempt to block any success by this President. They have called him a communist, socialist, and other derogatory names in an effort to rally their base against President Obama and any legislator who may agree with his policies. He has received numerous, vile threats to his life, disguised under the veil of free speeech. He has endured more personal hatred than any previous resident of the Oval Office. But the efforts of the TeaBaggers to destroy President Obama have failed miserably, possibly further fueling their anger and hatred of the President.
President Obama is, after all, the Tea Party’s worst nightmare. He is a successful black politician, a constitutional lawyer who graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. He spent one term as a U.S. Senator, before becoming President of the United States. In his first Presidential election, he was swept into office in a flood of voter support. He decisively won re-election in 2012. That alone had to drive the right-wingers crazy! During his tenure as President, Barack Obama has given the conservatives many more reasons to disapprove of him.
Upon taking office, President Obama inherited a financial crisis, created by the failed policies of his predecessor, George Bush, which resulted in the worst national recession, second in nature only to the Great Depression. Yet, he has managed to resuscitate the economy, adding job growth and financial stability. He created a national health care system, the Affordable Care Act, which now provides an opportunity for previously uninsured individuals and families to afford medical treatment. President Obama continues to push Congress for a Jobs Bill, and additional funding for public education. He has denounced the policies of the Bush/ Cheney era, which allowed for illegal torture of prisoners of war, and has sought to end our country’s involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. He has pushed for additional funding to support our troops while they serve in the military, and upon their return home. He has supported the rights of ALL Americans, regardless of their ethnic background, the color of their skin, or their sexual orientation. He has reduced the deficit. He has used his Presidential Authority of Executive Action to provide for Immigration Reform in the country. He continues to fight for student loan reform, so that anyone who desires higher education will be able to afford it. He has accomplished these feats and kept most of his campaign promises, without the support of the conservatives in Congress, who have invariably tried to block any progress or success for the President’s programs. And for the remaining two years of his Presidency, Barack Obama has issued fair warning to his enemies in Congress, saying that if they continue their efforts to seek his failure and pass legislation that could prove harmful to his policies and the American people, he will use his veto power against them. It’s very clear, President Obama does not intend to be a lame-duck President.
I believe the History will look favorably upon the Obama Presidency. This President has succeeded where others have failed. In doing so, he may have given the Tea Party more reason to dislike him, but he has also given this nation hope and credibility that we had lost under the previous administration. As the new year approaches, I look forward to the continued success of President Obama’s policies, and the fading voices of his enemies and critics.
