Rarely has a sitting president expressed such disdain and unmitigated gall in dealing with an important and strategic ally as the Obama team in dealing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As soon as House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, exercised his discretion to invite whoever he wishes to speak to a session of the House, Obama and his spokesmen not only blasted the Speaker but Netanyahu as well. The concerted effort by the Obama team to tarnish Netanyahu shows just how deep the hatred flows toward Netanyahu and Israel at a particularly dangerous time when Israel stands alone in a vast ocean of radicalized Islamic terrorists and when those very terrorists have set their sites on American soil.
As the time for the Netanyahu speech draws near, the administration’s vitriol aimed at the Prime Minister and Israel has only intensified. Susan Rice in particular took to the airwaves to trash Israel, Netanyahu, and the House Speaker who invited him. One reporter in the mainstream media had an unusual way of putting it, stating that the Obama team’s tactic is to “issue a rebuttal” even though Netanyahu has not yet given the speech. The intent is to smear Netanyahu before he even gets to speak.
But this path is fraught with great danger. A harbor full of deadly landmines threatens Obama and the Democrats. Netanyahu’s previous speeches were met with cheers and wild applause, even among Democrats. Any perceived snub on the part of Democrats will immediately offend multimillions of Jews, jeopardizing a long standing alliance between Israel and Democrats.
In addition, Obama and his spokesmen act like petulant children who never grew up when they throw tantrums over Boehner’s invitation to Netanyahu. The Constitution does not forbid a Speaker of the House from inviting heads of state to address Congress, neither does it require the Speaker to get a president’s permission before doing so. Further, nowhere does the Constitution state that a president has the sole authority to issue invitations to foreign heads of state. There is thus no legal restriction whatsoever that would prevent Boehner from issuing the invitation.
The only problem in the midst of this unnecessary melodrama is Obama’s wounded ego. And a wounded ego is dangerous in the midst of dangerous times. But then, thinking people have always known that Obama represents a very real danger on several fronts, not the least of which are foreign policy, terrorism, and the liberties guaranteed to the citizens in the Constitution. The only surprise to some is the blatant public nature of this tantrum.
