Reservations are going fast but Clevelanders still have time to experience a Victorian Christmas celebration inspired by British author Charles Dickens at the historical Ohio Village in Columbus, Ohio at their multiple Dickens of a Christmas holiday events. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Cleveland to Columbus.
Dickens of a Christmas Each Christmas season, Ohio Village transforms itself into a Victorian village filled with crafts, decorations and traditions of the Victorian era with activities like a Christmas play, a puppet show, cooking demonstrations, caroling, craft and artisan demonstrations, performances by the Ohio Village Singers and samplings of foods from that time period (at the Farm House).
Other activities for visitors to enjoy include making bouquets of fresh greens (at the Pharmacy), hand tinting Victorian Christmas cards (at the newspaper office), visiting with St. Nicholas (at the church) and stringing popcorn and cranberries for the Village’s Holiday Tree (at the Lodging House).
Special Historical Note: Charles Dickens actually visited Ohio in 1842 just about the time he published the classic Christmas tale, “A Christmas Carol.”
As visitors stroll the historic Village, they will encounter a variety of 19th century costumed characters as well as St. Nicholas and The Ghost of Marley.
Dickens of a Christmas is being offered on December 6-9, 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21. Hours are 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and noon – 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $12 for adults and $9 for youth (6-12). Parking is free.
Holiday Dining Events at Ohio Village All dining events require advance registration. Offered on Thursday, December 18 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. This is Your Life, Ebenezer Scrooge features a festive holiday dinner hosted by “Jacob Marley” who will introduce people from Ebenezer Scrooge’s past (both the good and the bad). The event takes place at the American House Hotel within Ohio Village and cost is $60 per person. Call 800-686-1541 to make reservations.
Ohio Village is also offering a Christmas Buffet being held at the American House Hotel on Sunday, December 21 (with a seating at 11 a.m.). Guests will enjoy the buffet and entertainment by the Ohio Village Singers in addition to all the activities at the Dickens of a Christmas celebration in the Village. Cost is $44 for adults and $22 for ages 6-12. Reservations are required.
