If you’re at SXSW tonight, your only stop should be at the Okayplayer and OkayAfrica showcase at the Okayplayer House at Bungalow on 92 Rainey Street. Starting at 7 p.m., Okayplayer and OkayAfrica are “pull[ing] out all the stops for their live showcase” with a lineup that includes BADBADNOTGOOD, Hiatus Kaiyote, Your Old Droog, Ibeyi, THEESatisfaction and Greighwolfe.
BADBADNOTGOOD are a Canadian “‘punkjazz’ ensemble who first took the world by storm via their collaborations with Odd Future-ists Frank Ocean and Tyler, The Creator–and then confirmed their place as an unstoppable musical force this year with their brand new collaborative LP with Ghostface Killah, titled Sour Soul“. They will be joined by some surprise special guests in what is sure to be a can’t-miss moment.
Hiatus Kaiyote are a Grammy-nominated contemporary soul group from Australia. Along with their 2014 Grammy nomination, they were nominated for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year at the 2014 APRAs. In 2013, they won Best Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Worldwide Awards and the Best Emerging Artist at the Music Victoria Age Awards. They will be bringing their brand of “multi-dimensional polyrhythmic gangster shit” to the showcase.
Your Old Droog is an East Coast style rapper from New York City. He is best known for the low-profile release of his 2014 debut, the “Your Old Droog EP”. He “seemingly came out of nowhere. No pictures, no YouTube videos, no Instagram account, no Twitter—no way for the entitled, deep-diving rap fan of 2014 to see what this guy was all about. All they had to go on was the music”. This led a lot of rap fans to speculate and make YouTube documentaries about who Droog was until he cleared things up in a profile with the New Yorker.
Ibeyi are a French Cuban duo of twin sisters who “play percussive instruments, the Cajon and the Batas, [and] piano. Together the twins sing and combine modern pop, hip-hop and electronic influences with the traditional sounds of their father’s Yoruba culture”.
THEESatisfaction is a “cosmic yet down-to-earth alternative R&B duo, based in Seattle and part of that city’s Sub Pop label”.
Greighwolfe is the sole new artist on the showcase lineup. He made his “online debut via Okayplayer’s First Look series–and … is already garnering comparisons to Miguel and D’Angelo”.
This showcase goes until 2 a.m. and will have DJs Spoko and Fever Trails spinning the sounds of South Africa between sets. For more information on Okayplayer or the showcase, please visit their website.
