When Apple came out with their first iPhone in 2007 they also created a huge third party market for iPhone accessories. One of them, olloclip, has amassed a huge devoted following of photo enthusiasts who love their 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 lenses to enhance their creativity and take the iPhone camera where, perhaps, no one has gone before. With every new iPhone, olloclip (yes, spelled in lower case) is right behind with a new set of lenses. The latest, the olloclip 4-in-1 for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is no exception.
Patrick O’Neill, the founder and CEO of olloclip, was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013. With a passion for photography, this fun-loving CEO has a long history of designing products for other companies. An avid photographer himself, his idea to put tiny camera lenses on the iPhone turned out to be a big deal.
O’Neill and his team spent a year coming up with initial designs using a 3-D printer. His goal? To have a fish-eye, macro and wide-angle lens in one sleek design.
Today olloclip has more than 30 distributors worldwide and its products are sold at prominent chains such as Target and Best Buy. But best of all, olloclips are sold at Apple retail stores, the best coup of all.
The latest 4-in-1 lenses are exceptional. The olloclip goes through key design updates with every iteration of the iPhone. The latest 4-in-1 olloclip is encased in a nice, compact system that accommodates both the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. At around $80, this lens system is a bargain for all that it can do. It features a wide-angle lens, a fisheye and two macro lenses. And best of all it works with both the front AND rear cameras. Most other third party lenses only work with the rear camera. Plus it comes in a nifty kit that hangs lightly on your keychain or around your neck. That’s a super smart design
The design of the olloclip for the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus features a new metal clip that fits over the middle of the phone. Included are small plastic inserts to adjust the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus for a perfect fit. This would typically be a one time occurrence as most people own just one smartphone. Small notches provide tactile feedback when the lenses are lined up.
A lanyard that clips to your 4-in-1 is included so you never have to search for your olloclip. You have 3 plastic cases (blue, green or black) to choose from to dangle from your belt loop, key chain or around your neck for easy-access. A small micro-fiber pouch does double duty as a lens wipe while also carrying your lenses and accessories when not in use.
Optically the lenses provide some of the best macro, fish-eye and wide angle photos you can get with your iPhone. With the wide-angle you can muster up between 32 and 24 mm in width with a super sharp center. The outer edges are a little soft. The fisheye doubles the width while adding a fun distortion that you would expect from such a lens. The fisheye can make your selfies much more interesting while capturing more of the background behind you.
My favorite lenses in the mix are the macro lenses. The quality of the images rivals even some of the best DSLR macro lenses. Some people would be hard pressed to tell the difference in a side-by side comparison. To capture the best macro shots a tripod is highly recommended to avoid shake. There is a 10x and 15x macro lens both of which have a very shallow depth of field. The best way to control it is to touch the area on the screen that you want to focus on with your finger and let the lens do the rest. Even if macro photography wasn’t your thing before you will love these lenses and start looking for every opportunity to take macro shots.
