One Direction won all three of the prizes that the group was nominated for at the 2014 American Music Awards (AMAs), a show that took place on Nov. 23 at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. ABC had the U.S. telecast of the ceremony. The awards were voted for by the public at the official AMAs website or on Twitter by including the hashtag #AMAs.
One Direction won the awards for Artist of the Year; Favorite Album – Pop/Rock (for “Midnight Memories”); and Favorite Band, Duo or Group – Pop/Rock. One Direction also performed “Night Changes,” the second single off of One Direction’s fourth album, “Four.” Katy Perry (who did not attend the show) was the other top winner, with three awards.
One Direction is the world’s best-selling act to emerge from “The X Factor.” The group was formed in 2010, when Simon Cowell and other “X Factor” decision makers put together five contestants (Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson) who originally auditioned as solo singers. One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010, and Cowell signed them to Syco Music, the company he co-owns with Sony Music. Since then, One Direction has had several No. 1 hits and sold-out tours.

Thank you to Simon Cowell, who put us here, and Sonny Takhar. I want to say thank you to Columbia [Records] in America. America feels like a second home to us now. It’s been amazing how well we’ve been received over here, so thank you so, so much.”
