Tonight at the Venetian Resort, Cotai Arena in Macau, China, shown LIVE on HBO Pay-Per-View, WBO welterweight champion Manny ‘PacMan’ Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) defends his title against unbeaten WBO light welterweight champion, Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds. Not many knew the name Chris Algieri until he defeated Ruslan ‘Siberian Rocky’ Provodnikov (23-3, 16 KO’s ) for the WBO light welterweight title in front of his hometown fans back on June 14th at the Barclays Center in New York.
This Top Rank (Bob Arum) Promotions card includes China’s flyweight prospect and former 3-times Olympic Gold Meadalist, Zou Shimig (5-0, 1 KO) taking on Thailand veteran Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym (27-0-2, 12 KO’s) in a scheduled for 12 rounds bout; Russian star Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 2 KO) battles Thailand star Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (52-1, 33 KO’s) for the WBO World featherweight title, scheduled for 12 rounds and American Jesse Vargas (25-0, 9 KO’s) takes on American Antonio DeMarco (31-3-1, 23 KO’s) for the WBA World light welterweight belt in another scheduled for 12 rounds bout.
The fight is actually held on Sunday morning in China (them 13 hours ahead EST) to accommodate the fans viewing LIVE on HBO Pay-Per-View in the United States.
It may be safe to say the objective of the undercard is to profile and excite the Asian contingent, them being at a fever pitch by time Pacquiao enters the ring, with the Americans on the card more than likely providing the best entertainment.
College-educated and well spoken, the Horatio Alger ‘rags-to-riches’ Algieri fable has endeared him to American fight fans who have taken a liking to the huge underdog but Algieri has never been in with someone having the skill set of a Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach has planned for Algieri “to run” and specific work was done cutting off the ring for this contest.
This fight should come down to the length advantage of Algieri (height and arm) versus the experience, boxing ability and punching power of Pacquiao (38 KO’s) clearly mandating Algieri box and stay away, him hoping to come away with the win by decision.
Should Algieri be successful look for a boring 12 round snooze-fest, something his camp has already insinuated they are looking for, while Pacquiao hopes to force the light punching New Yorker to stand and fight.
For Chris Algieri to get the ‘W’ tonight in front of a hostile pro-Pacquiao crowd, he’ll find himself in a situation like never before.
Manny Pacquao imposes his will (and the will of the thousands in attendance), stopping Chris Algieri in the later rounds unless he’s forced to engage earlier, the eventual outcome even sooner.
Should you decide adding the $59.95 cost of tonight’s event to your already high cable bill is not in your budget, for a $10 cover charge just head over to any one of the TWIN PEAKS Restaurant’s in Centennial (303) 779-8946, Golden (303) 278-8232 or Broomfield (303) 469-3825 and be sure to tell them who sent you.
Their adult beverages are cold, their food tasty and hot with the servers, as my dad used to say, ‘Easy on the Eyes’.
