The low carb Atkins, Paleo and Mediterranean diets were the most popular diets of 2014 based on Google searches, Celebrity Health reported. Many of the diets in the top 10 list were buoyed by the weight loss success of high-profile celebrities.
The Paleo diet, which was the most popular diet of 2013, ranked first for the second year in a row, thanks to its huge celebrity following, which includes Megan Fox, LeBron James and Joe Manganiello.
Research suggests the Paleo diet accelerates weight loss, reduces blood pressure, and prevents cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer’s. A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates the Paleo diet is twice as effective as other diets for promoting weight loss and reducing belly fat.
Last year, country superstar Tim McGraw made headlines after unveiling his dramatic 40-pound weight loss, which he attributed to the low carb Paleo diet and CrossFit workouts.
McGraw stopped drinking in 2008 and adopted the Paleo diet, an alcohol-free diet that emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, and processed foods.
In addition to going Paleo, Tim embarked on an intense workout program that included CrossFit, running, weight-lifting and basketball. The resulting 40-pound weight loss has given Tim the body of an athlete, and he now has rippling eight-packs for the first time in his life — at age 47.
Other celebrities who have hopped on the low-carb weight loss bandwagon include Kim Kardashian, who lost 56 pounds in six months by following a low carb ketogenic-style Atkins diet that limited her daily carb intake to less than 60 grams.
Low-carb diets such as the Atkins, Paleo and ketogenic diets promote rapid weight loss by forcing the body to burn fat for fuel in a metatolic state called ketosis, according to obesity expert Dr. Eric Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean diet, which was third on the most popular diets list for 2014, has been praised by TV star Brooke Burke Charvet, who credited the Mediterranean diet for her rapid post-baby weight loss and hot bikini body at 43.
Other popular diets of 2014 included the gluten-free diet, the Dash Diet, the South Beach Diet and Dr. Ian Smith’s Super Shred Diet, which promises 20-pound weight loss in less than four weeks.
