“Heavy metal is what I’m into. Shit that moves you. Shit that has heart and soul.” Dimebag Darrell quotes
“You gotta look beyond the mainstream… the mainstream’ll drown you, you know? There’s always a pulse in the underground that I love. And the pulse in the underground is what keeps heavy metal alive.” Phil Anselmo
In the hearts of the true metal music lovers, beats the sounds of the axe wielding metal gods, Pantera. We are talking from the days of Dime Bag Darrell, all the way through Phil Anselmo.
Not only are the hard driving riffs addicting, the story behind the lyrics are something to be noted.
The song, ‘Cemetery Gates‘ has been ranked at a rocking #35 in Guitar World’s top 100 greatest solos of all time. Dimebag Darrell says: “I got home with a pretty good buzz on, picked up my axe, turned on the four-track, cranked it loud as hell with the loose buzz theory that anything and everything goes, and just played it, I played three solos back-to-back, didn’t bother listening to them, crashed out not so happy. The next morning I woke up thinking I had a lot of work to do. I almost started from scratch but then I decided to slow down and listen. So I fired up the four-track, put my ears on and bam! Lo and behold, there it was! The first lead I played the night before was it for sure. Hey man, the second and third weren’t bad, but the first had that first-take magic! I didn’t touch it.” Song Facts
Pantera’s ‘Five Minutes Alone’, another great story behind the music. A concert in San Diego, CA, a heckler, persistent at heckling Phil Anselmo, is jumped by fans. Hell yeah, jumped by fans, mostly due to Phil’s persistence. The poor boy’s father sued Pantera (We say poor very loosely). When the loud mouthed kid’s father called Pantera’s manager, he said, “Give me five minutes alone with that Phil Anselmo guy, and I’ll show him who the big daddy is.” Phil’s response, “You give me five minutes alone with that cat’s Dad, I’ll whoop his ass.” CLASSIC! LOVE IT!
Finally, the best, but by far not the least…’Walk’. This heart pumping, head banging song, was use by WWE’s wrestler, The Edge, when he was an Indie Wrester known as Sexton Hardcastle; also, as the entrance theme to Xtreme Championship Wrestling’s, Rob Van Dam. The lyrics behind this chart topping Pantera song are, well, almost of biblical proportions in the rock world. The song ‘Walk’ is about people that pretended to be part of the Heavy Metal scene, but weren’t really into it…..aka ‘POSERS’! Which, if you are a true Pantera fan, you are not!!!
Pantera is a band that even if they don’t produce another song, as long as they live, will go on forever. Their music, from the lyrics to the awesome riffs, is timeless. Yes, timeless in the hearts of the true blooded Metal Heads!
