Competitive “Magic: The Gathering” has never really been a thing at PAX East. For the most part, tournaments run at PAX East have mostly been geared towards new players and introducing players to the game. However, that seems to have changed for PAX East 2015.
According to the schedule, one of the most noticeable changes to the tournament format are the prizes that are given out. Most scheduled events (unless otherwise noted) will be four rounds with the top prize being 180 prize tickets. Those with a records of 3-0-1 will get 140 prize tickets with payouts going as low as 2-2 with 10 prize tickets.
As of right now, there is no word as to what kind of prizes will be given out. We touched base with owner and Tournament Organizer, Tom Shea, and he said that as of right now, nothing had been finalized, but a prize list may go up sometime next week. When it does, you can expect Boston Games Examiner to get that list out. For now, players can treat this like they were going to an arcade. Shea did mention that Penny Arcade pins would be part of the “Prize Wall” you could exchange your tickets for.
Attendees can expect the usual gauntlet of tournaments such as 8-player on demand events for most of the legal formats such as Standard and Limited. In regards to special tournaments, there is a new tournament called “Mat Mania” which is a sealed event for $35 and those who enter will also get a playmat.
The highlight of the weekend is scheduled for Saturday at noon. The PAX East Challenge will be a Khans of Tarkir block sealed event with a player cap of 225. It will be a Competitive REL event with a number of Swiss rounds based on attendance and a cut to top 8 which will conclude on Sunday at noon. The prizes for the challenge are as follows:
1st + 2nd, FOIL MODERN MASTERS SET each
3rd-4th Foil M 2015 Set each
5th-8th M2015 Uncut Sheet
9th – 16th: 180 Prize Tix
Additional Prize Tix based on attendance
