Krista Contreras and her wife Jami Contreras were preparing for the birth of their baby when they interviewed pediatricians and finally found one that they thought would be a great fit for their new little family. Dr. Vesna Roi, 49, was the women’s choice because she used a holistic approach of natural oils and probiotics, according to USA Today on Feb. 19. Roi also knew that the women were lesbians, which didn’t seem to make a bit of difference to this doctor.
The day came when Jami and Krista took their little 6-day-old Bay Windsor Conteras for her first visit to the pediatrician. The proud and excited moms sat in the waiting room until they were called into the exam room. This is where they were told by another pediatrician that Dr. Rios would not be the baby’s pediatrician, but this doctor would treat their baby instead, according to 13 WMAZ Detroit.
The two moms were told that Dr. Rios had a change of heart and “after much prayer” she decided she could not treat their baby “because they are lesbians,” according to USA Today. The women were instantly crushed at this blatant decision of discrimination. They were humiliated, embarrassed and overwhelmed with the realization that discrimination against the LGBT community was alive and well and was now passed on to their baby.
To add insult to injury, what this doctor did was totally legal in their home state of Michigan. While 22 states have laws on the books that prohibit this type of discrimination from doctors, Michigan is not one of those states.
The new moms kept this devastating event to themselves for some time, but it is because it is perfectly legal under Michigan laws for the doctor to refuse a patient because she has lesbian moms that they’ve decided to come out with this incident. They want people to know about the type of discrimination that the LGBT community is still going through today.
Sadly, this was about an innocent little baby. This child was only 6-days-old when she was touched by the ugly hand of discrimination. The doctor wrote a personal letter to Krista and Jami saying that she felt that she couldn’t develop the relationship with their baby that she has with her other patients. Dr. Roi wrote:
“Dear Jami & Krista, I am writing this letter of apology as I feel that it is important and necessary. I never meant to hurt either of you. After much prayer following your prenatal (visit), I felt that I would not be able to develop the personal patient doctor relationship that I normally do with my patients.”
She didn’t explain why she couldn’t have the same relationship with their baby as she does with her other patients who have a mom and a dad instead of two moms. The doctor also apologized for not telling them this in person, saying that she didn’t want to ruin their excitement of their first visit with their new baby. Sadly, that is exactly what happened due to this doctor’s actions.
