In their second production, PMT Productions presents the musical “Tick, Tick… Boom!” by Jonathan Larson. In a preview last night, press got the chance to see what the public can expect to experience once performances begin on Thursday.
This musical was written by Jonathan Larson with an autobiographical plot. Larson is best known for his musical “Rent,” which was both successful on Broadway and as a motion picture. “Tick, Tick… Boom!” was originally performed as a one man play yet after Larson’s death in ‘96, David Auburn developed it into a three act production and it premiered Off Broadway in 2001.
This production is the second for PMT Productions after a successful run last year with a summer concert called “Midtown Live.” The concert event combined both live and prerecorded video as cast members sang solo songs as well as group numbers while allowing the audience a deeper understanding into the company and the cast. Their current show is a unique production and after the preview “Tick, Tick… Boom!” offers an encouraging promise for the future of this company.
Speaking with Musical Director and Founder Eduardo Guzman prior to the preview, he expressed his pleasure with the current show and the future of PMT Productions. Travis Kirk Coombs, who stars as Jon in the musical, spoke with me before the show and explained a bit about himself and the production. Coombs explained he lived in New York appearing in two Off Broadway productions before returning to Houston. His ease off stage combined with his commanding stage presence makes him the ideal leading man.
The intimate performing space coupled with the three person cast creates the ideal minimalist Larson dynamic. Coombs stars as Jon with Kyle Crawford and Kasi Hollowell taking on multiple characters throughout the production. If audiences forget the magic in the musicals of Larson, this production does an outstanding job reminding us. Larson has a one of a kind way of writing his heart and soul into his music and lyrics and this cast makes his words come alive. Coombs as Jon offers an honest and emotional performance, exhibited even in the preview, which honors the memory of the musicals creator. Coombs offers a top notch performance with outstanding vocals which only become more impressive with each number.
Crawford and Hollowell equal the dynamics and talent of Coombs on stage. Even during the preview, it was evident just how much the cast enjoyed not only performing the production but performing together. A key highlight of the preview was when Hollowell took center stage and belted out “Come to Your Senses.” The closing number “Louder Than Words” offered the perfect end to the preview. Despite lighting issues towards the end of the production, this was an ideal preview showcasing exactly what audiences should expect when coming for the full show. One thing is for sure, audiences will not be disappointed.
After the preview speaking with cast member Kyle Crawford, who also and handles Auditions/Casting at PMT, about Larson he remarked how this musical is one of Larson’s lesser known works. There will be many readers who know Larson’s name but few who will know much of this musical, yet this cast is so vibrant and breathes such life into the production presenting it for an entirely new generation to fall in love with and appreciate it.
