His department for an incredible act of selflessness and compassion has recognized Officer Olexa of the the Wheat Ridge Police in Colorado. While on duty this past weekend, Officer Olexa observed a single mother and her children, ages 6 months and 2 ½ years old, standing in front of a gas station. Concerned because temperatures are below ten degrees, the officer asked the woman if they had a place to stay. The woman said they were on the street. Officer Olexa then purchased a hotel room for the night for the family. Officer Olexa then gave the children Wheat Ridge Police Department teddy bears to keep them comforted. The officer made contact with other community resources to help the single mother get back on her feet. “Officer Olexa truly is a shining example of ‘Exceptional People Providing Exceptional Service’” a WRPD representative says.

Tallahassee, Florida Deputy Sheriff Christopher Smith was shot from ambush when he responded to reports of a house fire. Deputy Smith was among the first to arrive on scene. Immediately upon his arrival, a subject who declared himself “anti government” lying in wait outside the burning structure ambushed Deputy Smith. Deputy Smith was shot multiple times and killed instantly. Deputy Wulfekuhl also responded to the scene and was shot and wounded. The suspect then armed himself with Deputy Smith’s service weapon and walked down the street shooting at fire department personnel and first responders. An off-duty Tallahassee City Police officer who lived in the area heard the gun shots, donned a bullet resistant vest, and responded to the scene to engage the suspect. The suspect was shot and killed. Deputy Smith served the Leon County Sheriff Department for nearly six years. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
The above stories did not cause a riot, never made the national news, may have been reported in the local media, and are a representation of what thousands of officers do, every day, for their community.
